STEUBENVILLE - The filing deadline for the May 4 primary election passed Wednesday with only a handful of candidates locally throwing their hats in the ring.
Steubenville residents currently have one contested race and two levies to decide when they go to the polls in May.
A 1-mill levy renewal also is on the ballot for voters in the Bantam Ridge, Brentwood, Cross Creek and West Park precincts.
In Steubenville:
— Incumbent 4th Ward Councilman Scott Dressel, 411 Madison St., will battle Royal Mayo, 544 Highland Ave., for the Democratic nomination. No one filed on the Republican ticket.
— Incumbent 2nd Ward Councilman Craig Petrella, 1665 Moreland Drive, is unopposed on the Democratic ticket in the primary election. He'll square off with Republican Tracy McManamon, 616 Belleview Blvd., in November.
— Incumbent 6th Ward Councilman Bob Villamagna did not file for re-election. The only candidate to file was Michael Hernon, 217 Efts Lane, who is running as a Republican.
— Running unopposed for another term as mayor is Republican Jerry Barilla, 4353 Steuben Woods Drive. No Democrats filed.
¯ Voters also will be asked to renew the 0.7 of 1 percent income tax levy, with proceeds earmarked for street improvements, capital improvements, equipment, parks and recreation capital improvements and the general fund; and the 0.3 of 1 percent income tax levy, with the proceeds covering salaries and street improvements. Both requests are for five-year levies.
In Toronto:
— Vying for the council at large seat on Toronto Council are Democrat Ronald L. Holmes, 631 N. Fourth St., and Republican Mike Burkey, 1002 S. River Ave. The winner will advance to the November general election.
— Frank E. McEwen Jr., 307 Alpine Drive, a Democrat, filed for president of council, while James W. Orsini, 523 Nebo Drive, filed for the Democratic nomination as Toronto treasurer.
In Mingo Junction, no one filed for council or treasurer.
Write-in candidates have until 4 p.m. Feb. 22 to declare their intentions.
