PITTSBURGH -- In celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Carnegie Science Center will unveil a new installation that honors influential women in S.T.E.M. during a Facebook Live at 10 a.m. Thursday.
During the Facebook Live, science center staff members will introduce viewers to the seven women featured in the installation by describing their accomplishments in biomedical engineering, paleontology, sports medicine, conservation and a variety of other S.T.E.M. fields.
The installation, which is displayed in Carnegie Science Center's FedEx S.T.E.M. Learning Labs, highlights the following women:
• Ritu Raman, postdoctoral fellow at MIT;
• Adele Luta, scientist and innovator at Oceaneering International Inc.;
• Arlyne Simon, biomedical engineer at Intel and author of "Abby Invents;"
• Dana Bolles, payload logistics lead at NASA;
• Dr. Monica Rho, director of women's sports medicine at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab;
• Myria Perez, dossil preparator at Perot Museum of Nature and Science; and
• Kristen Lear, bat conservationist and environmental educator at Bat Conservation International.
Each of the women featured in the installation are ambassadors with the IF/THEN Initiative, a nationwide effort by Lyda Hill Philanthropies to increase the representation of women and gender minorities in S.T.E.M. fields through projects that illustrate their accomplishments. Carnegie Science Center was awarded an IF/THEN Gender Equity Grant last year to support such projects, including the Women in S.T.E.M. Speaker Series, Girls Rock Science and this new installation.
The FedEx S.T.E.M. Learning Labs, located on the ground floor of the PPG Science Pavilion, are nine specialized classrooms that support inquiry-based instruction and project-based learning in biology, chemistry and physics. The labs are a multipurpose space used for summer camps, student workshops, teacher professional development workshops and meetings.
