Celebrating acts of kindness

Times have been hard for everyone during the pandemic and recent cold weather, and the kind acts of essential workers and others, from neighbors to strangers, can make a big difference to those affected in large and small ways.

The Herald-Star and Weirton Daily Times are partnering with Chambers and James Funeral, Pet and Cremation Services of Wellsburg and Follansbee to recognize people in Brooke, Hancock, Jefferson and Harrison counties who have stepped up to help others, whether they be first responders, public employees or simply Good Samaritans who have gone out of their way to assist others.

Such assistance may include braving inclement weather to do a necessary job, checking on a senior citizen, mowing a neighbor’s lawn or shoveling a driveway, among other good deeds.

Beginning Wednesday, nominees for Random Acts of Kindness and Essential Workers may be made through the newspapers’ websites at heraldstaronline.com or weirtondailytimes.com.

“We at Chambers and James have presented our own Beacon Awards for people who have provided outstanding care to residents of nursing homes,” said Eric Fithyan, owner of the funeral homes. “So we’re happy to aid in recognizing community members who have helped their fellow citizens in the same spirit. It exemplifies our personal goal of going above and beyond to serve the community.”

Nominations will be accepted through March 17, with voting by the public to occur from March 19 to March 31. The winner will be receive with a gift card to an area business and a donation to a local charity in his or her name.

Other local businesses are invited to show their support by donating gift cards. For information, contact Joe Lovell, special events coordinator for Ogden Newspapers, at (740) 633-1131 ext. 769 or jlovell@theintelligencer.net.
