STEUBENVILLE -- It's last call for Christmas parade entries.
Steubenville's "Sights and Sounds of Christmas: Nutcracker Magic 2020" parade is set to begin at noon Dec. 5. Deadline for entries is Tuesday.
This year's title sponsor is Eastern Gateway Community College, with additional sponsorships from the Kessler Family and Capital Health Care Network.
Serving as Grand Marshalls will be Steubenville's Richard and Heidi Pflug.
"We are delighted to honor the Pflugs for their dedicated and selfless service to our city and community," Mayor Jerry Barilla said, pointing out the Pflugs, longtime owners and operators of Tri-State Printing Co., have been generous supporters of Steubenville organizations over the years.
"Richard and Heidi have given so much of themselves to our community that we felt this was an appropriate way to say thank you," Barilla said.
Steubenville Visitor Center Executive Director Paul Zuros agreed, saying the parade "is such an important part of our holiday celebrations."
"It has become a tradition in Steubenville, and we are so thankful that our sponsors have made it possible to ensure that it continues," he said.
Parade organizer Mary Snyder said they're still awaiting entry forms.
"We have had many phone calls and messages from groups and individuals and will have several new units in this year's event," she said. "It is a major undertaking to organize the parade, to be sure all the units know where to line up, and to prepare the information for broadcasting so we need those entry forms as soon as possible. The deadline for entries will be Nov. 17."
In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, organizers are encouraging visitors to watch the parade from the comfort of their own homes. "We want everyone to be safe while they enjoy the parade. If you do decide to come out, please stay in your family groups, social distance and wear a mask." Zuros said.
Snyder said the parade again will be televised and will include several bands and dance troupes, with prizes for the most creative floats and entries. The parade will begin at North Street and continue down Fourth Street to South Street. As the grand finale, Santa will come into town in a unique Steel Tanker Sleigh and greet all those along the route.
