Edison moves ahead with field plans

RICHMOND -- The Edison Local Board of Education is moving ahead with plans to add baseball and softball fields on campus at Edison High School.
Officials agreed at the Nov. 19 regular session to include the project as part of ongoing efforts to unite sports activities at one site for safety and feasibility.
"The board made a commitment to move forward with projects for the Edison High School baseball and softball fields," said Superintendent Bill Beattie. "Both facilities will have turf and lights."
Plans remain preliminary but hopes are to have the ballfields ready for play in the spring of 2022.
Other upgrades have taken place so far with new turf at the multi-purpose athletic field to host football, soccer and track activities.
Demolition and site preparation have taken place to create a new press box and more grandstand seating. Additionally, Canfield-based Hively Construction is overseeing the estimated $6.44 million fieldhouse project that is eyed for completion around December of 2021.
The sports facility will include a new gym and site work has begun on that structure.
"Everything is coming together," Beattie said. "The grandstands are going up and the foundation for the press box is in. We hope to hear within the next couple of weeks that the area will be wrapped up."
Further plans call for a new concession stand, locker rooms and restrooms and Beattie said the latter project should be done in time for the start of track season in March. The end goal is to improve safety for students and reduce travel to facilities which are spread throughout the district.
The current baseball and softball fields are located at Jefferson State Lake near Richmond while track practice and meets and junior high basketball practice have been held at Stanton Elementary in Hammondsville.
Among other business, the board:
¯ Approved Bobbyjon Bauman and Thomas Bocek on the substitute teachers' list;
¯ Approved supplemental positions for Shaylyn McCarthy, Summer Householder and Nate Kline for ECAT intervention; Jason Waggoner, junior high wrestling; Anwaa Martin, assistant wrestling; Ken Peterson, assistant golf; and Shauna Parsons, volunteer cheerleading;
¯ Accepted a resignation from Kelly Dopp as Destination Imagination coordinator;
¯ Approved clarifications for a school nurse's job descriptions;
¯ Received the annual Nutrition Standards Report for Fiscal Year 2020 from district Administrative Assistant Fatima Smuck and an update on professional development activities from Assistant Superintendent Julie Kireta;
¯ Approved an increase in substitute driver rates to $15.25 per hour effective Dec. 1;
¯ Approved a K-12 Network Connectivity Grant for $7,200;
¯ Approved a co-ed Indoor Track and Field Club;
¯ Set the next meeting for 6 p.m., Dec. 9 at John Gregg Elementary.
