Candidates for Jefferson County Junior Fair queen announced

SMITHFIELD — Ten young women who have been through the 4-H program or worked as independents will be on stage Sunday for the selection of the Jefferson County Junior Fair queen.

The selection will be made after 4-H awards are presented by Angie Allison and the 4-H Extension group at the Rozsa Pavillion. Opening ceremonies will include the national anthem, the raising of the flag and a welcome by Ray Hilderbrand, board president.

Vickie Winnery, junior fair coordinator, will be in charge of the coronation of the queen, who will help with 4-H events during the week. The queen will take part in the January talent show that’s part of the Ohio State Fairs queen event. Sarah Mazzaferro was the 2019 queen.

This year’s fair will be an unusual event, and will be called the Jefferson County Junior Fair because there will be no Jefferson County Agricultural Society programs included.

The livestock committee will be working with the young people who have raised animals to be auctioned off beginning at noon Aug. 22 at the Gary Cain Memorial Building.

The sale order will be the poultry, rabbits, goats, lambs, hogs, feeder calves and steers. Only the grand and reserve animals will be brought out by the ones who raised them. The others will be in the livestock barns to be viewed for those interested in making a purchase.

There will be no picnic held because of health concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, but commercially bagged snacks and bottled drinks will be available. There will be several food vendors on the site as well.
