Remembering the fallen

1 min read

Those who lost their lives while working in local steel mills were quietly remembered in Steubenville and Weirton this week. Carmen DeStefano and Paul DiGiacinto, longtime members of United Steelworkers Local 1190 and employees of the former Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp., placed a wreath at the Ohio Valley Steelworker Statue, which stands on Fourth Street and overlooks the site of the former mill. In Weirton, meanwhile, members of Steelworkers Local 2911 placed a wreath at the Worker Memorial Plaza at the intersection of Main Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, where the names of those who died while on the job at the former Weirton Steel Corp. are listed. Tuesday was Worker Memorial Day, and organizers had to cancel their annual recognitions because of stay-at-home orders and social distancing requirements associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.
