NEW CUMBERLAND -- Hancock County commissioners expect to save taxpayers around $297,000 after furloughing 11 county workers due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Members of the board met Thursday afternoon to discuss actions they took after a May 8 special meeting, which included a variety of cuts to full-time and part-time workers, according to Commission President Joe Barnabei.
Furloughed were one employee each in the circuit court and prosecutor's office; two in the sheriff's department, with another four to follow this week; three in the assessor's office; and four in the commissioners' office.
Commissioners also agreed tentatively to reopen the courthouse on May 26, but the move could be subject to change and include specific COVID-19 directives.
The board also rescinded the emergency absentee voting policy that was adopted by the county on Dec. 30 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Hancock County Museum's $1,425 request to be reimbursed for repairs to the front porch were approved by the board as well as payment of $90,239 worth of general fund bills.
Two open seats on the county parks and recreation board will be advertised through May 29, commissioners said. Applicants must be residents of the Butler, Clark or Grant districts.
Commissioners agreed to reappoint Walter Ruszkowski to the Northern Panhandle Workforce Development Board and Max F. Nogay as a fiduciary commissioner for the county.
