WHEELING -- West Virginia Northern Community College has postponed its May 15 spring commencement and moved all summer classes online.
WVNCC will have a tribute video to be released on May 15, but the ceremony has been moved to an undetermined date in the future. The decision was announced by the College's President Daniel Mosser through video on the college's social media channels and was emailed to students.
WVNCC surveyed the graduating class before making the final decision to determine if students would prefer a virtual ceremony on May 15, or a live ceremony for students in the future.
"I was looking especially forward to commencement, as it would be my first as the president of this esteemed college," said Mosser. "However, given the current situation with the coronavirus and CDC recommendations, we had to make the difficult decision to postpone our regular commencement exercises scheduled on May 15. This pandemic has left us no other choice and this breaks my heart for each and every student."
College officials did assure each student they would still graduate on time, and, that upon successful completion of spring courses needed to fulfill their degree requirements, they will be issued their degree and their transcript will reflect the conferring of their earned academic credentials.
"Our students have worked extremely hard and deserve a ceremony with all the pomp and circumstance," said Mosser. "My hope is that they will find that this experience right now will help shape them for the challenges that lie ahead and they will remember what it took to conquer this adversity. They have shown great resilience and perseverance during this time."
WVNCC also announced that all summer classes, which begin on May 26, will be online. Students can still register for the summer semester at www.wvncc.edu
