STEUBENVILLE -- Jefferson Metropolitan Housing Authority has received nearly $600,000 in federal funding to cover costs associated with the COVID-19 outbreak.
U.S. Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, said $526,541 in Supplemental Public Housing Operating Funds has been awarded to JMHA for services provided during the pandemic.
Another $72,828 was awarded to assist JMHA's Housing Choice Voucher program and cover administrative and other expenses incurred during the pandemic. HUD said eligible expenses include activities to support or maintain the health and safety of assisted individuals and families, as well as costs related to retention and support of participating owners.
The funds were part of the bipartisan Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act. Ohio cities shared nearly $42 million in CARES funding.
"It is COVID-related," JMHA Executive Director Melody McClurg said. "HUD sent out several waivers on mandatory requirements" for things like late fees and evictions for non-payment.
"They released additional funds to all housing authorities to continue with operations," she said.
Portman said the HUD grants "are great news for housing authorities across Ohio that are struggling to keep up with growing housing expenses during this ongoing coronavirus pandemic."
"These funds will help (them) continue to meet the needs of those in their communities," he said.
