BLOOMINGDALE -- Health technologies students at the Jefferson County Joint Vocational Center can count themselves among the newest state-tested nurse's assistants in the community, making them one step closer to employment opportunities.
Instructor Tammy Sismondo said 13 students completed a state-approved exam administered through Diversified Technologies of Columbus on Feb. 19 and marked another year of 100-percent passage.
"Everyone in the class passed," Sismondo said. "They had to complete a written and skills portion and are all state-tested nurse's assistants. It gives them 12 points towards graduation and several students are going to work at local skilled living facilities."
She continued that five students already work with Lancia Nursing Home, one is at Carriage Inn of Steubenville and another is at Trinity Health System. Three of the five who are aides at Lancia's previously completed their exam at Lancia's Superior Nurse Aide Training Center in Wintersville last summer. Meanwhile, the remainder will work in phlebotomy with clinicals and further testing in that field.
Sismondo was pleased with the outcome and said her pupils have dedicated themselves to preparing for the work force.
"I'm very happy for the students. They worked really hard and it's a stepping stone in their future careers."
