Traffic safety presentation at JVS
Students at the Jefferson County Joint Vocational School got a lesson in traffic safety from officials with the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Troopers Greg Scalley, Warren Rawlings and Gabe Duvall led a presentation for early childhood and criminal justice students on Jan. 24 and discussed distracted driving, plus they answered questions and conducted demonstrations with impairment goggles. Students completed a series of tasks wearing the device, such as walking a balance beam and catching a ball. The goggles simulated various types of impairment from different levels of alcohol consumption to marijuana and other drugs. The program was part of a traffic safety grant the JVS Family, Career and Community Leaders of America chapter received from the Ohio FCCLA after the student group conducted a community needs assessment on major issues that have an impact on area teens. Mandy Meridith was among the students who performed on the demonstrations with Rawlings.
