WINTERSVILLE -- Indian Creek schools will send six teams to compete in the Destination Imagination Regional Competition Saturday at Union Local Schools in Morristown.

Teams of four-to-seven students in grades K-12 will represent eight area counties and aim to win their respective divisions to advance to state competition in late March in Centerville. Winners of that competition will be invited to compete in the Global Finals in Kansas City, Mo., in May. DI is an educational program in which teams work throughout the year to solve open-ended challenges and present their solutions beginning with the regional tournament. Each challenge participant gains knowledge and experience in areas including creative and critical thinking, project management, team building, conflict resolution, STEM, perseverance and a completion mindset.

Representing Indian Creek Middle School are the "Peanut Butters," who will compete in the Service Learning Challenge "It's About Time." They are required to address a community need and carry out a project that addresses that need, plus they must integrate information about their project into a skit presented to a panel of judges. Team members are Morgan McCumbers, Giana Brinskey, Brookelina Grigsby, Lilly Larkins, Matthew Barnes, Riley Tongate and team manager Amanda Dyson.

Also competing in "It's About Time" is the team "Christmas Catastrophe" from Hills Elementary, which includes Sophia Tongate, Harper Long, Isabella Wilson, Khloe Buchanan and Arabella Brown-Hess with team manager Lisa Longo. Hills Elementary will also send "The DI-vengers" to compete in the Improv Challenge "To The Rescue," in which they present an improvisational skit about a villain who causes superpowers to cause an unexpected situation. Members include David Pawelczyk, Jace Knox, Caleb Lyons, Quinn Ujcich and Parker Heath, along with team manager Ginny Pawelczyk and assistant team manager Natalie Ujcich.

"Space Cowbois" from Indian Creek High School will present a skit for the Fine Arts Challenge "Picture This," which features an unseen character and its impact on a team-selected photograph. The team is also required to theatrically recreate the photograph during the presentation and members are Quinton Boyd, Melissa Harrah and Sammi Price with team manager Jaime Price.

"Bear With Us," another ICHS team, consists of Michael Buzzard, Crystal Fisher, Jonathan Gorman, Megan Jones, Sarah Krupinski, Shawn McClurg and Sydney Melia. Wendy Fisher is the team manager and is assisted by Carrie Buzzard. They have chosen the Scientific Challenge "First Encounter" and will present a story about a first encounter between a real species and a real habitat, then show how the habitat changed as a result of the encounter.

The early learning challenge "Blast Off' will be performed by the "Galaxy Flyers" of Hills, where they must present an original play about characters who travel between planets and include a surprising twist on the trip. Among the members are Alexander Pawelczyk, Nicholas Rossi, Anacelia Parissi, Chloe Moore, Kayla Renner. And Garrett Rusnak. Team manager is Amanda Renner with assistance from Holly Parissi.

Sponsors for the Indian Creek program include Carpenter's Handyman and Construction, Corks and Creations, Howard Hanna Real Estate, Huntington Bank and MP Metal Worx.
