TORONTO — Several volunteers from the Gem City recently came together to plan the upcoming Campbell-Dickinson Run/Bike/Walk, the Noah Long Kid’s 1K and the St. Baldrick’s Shave-Off.

The events, scheduled to take place March 17, raise money to benefit the Teramana Cancer Center T.E.A.R. Fund, Childhood Cancer Research, the Toronto Coalition for Revitalization and the family of Toronto resident Karen McAdoo.

George Komar, president of coalition, said this year a portion of the proceeds from the eighth-annual Campbell-Dickinson Run will be donated to the McAdoo family for her care.

“The St. Baldrick’s Shave-Off has been a part of the Campbell-Dickinson Run/Bike/Walk for the last six years and Karen has been one of the volunteer shavers for four of those years,” Komar stated. “She has helped raise thousands of dollars for childhood cancer research. Karen now needs our help.”

McAdoo suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm on Dec. 2. She has undergone surgeries and continues “her strong fight to return to her husband Kevin and her two children, as well as her family, friends and the community who loves her and who she loves dearly,” organizers said.

As in years past, the events are centered around St. Patrick’s Day so as to honor the memory of Pat Campbell, a Jefferson County attorney who was born on the holiday and who died from an enlarged heart. The event is always held the Saturday closest to St. Patrick’s Day, Komar noted.

Participants are encouraged to “go all out” by dressing in green and to wear green accessories, including hats and face paint.

Once plans are finalized, further details will be announced, Komar noted. Those who would like to volunteer should contact him at (740) 317-3947 or go to the website www.TheGemCity.org.
