Steubenville Police
Truth or consequences: A woman is facing charges after she allegedly lied to police about two men firing a handgun, Thursday. Police said Melaina C. Pollo, 28, 2508 Cherry Avenue, had reported two men in a red truck had been harassing her and fired a gun into the air, but the men told them they'd been hired to do some work on the residence. The men said they opened the tailgate, and it made a loud noise, leading to an argument with the woman. They said she "might have confused the tailgate drop with a gunshot." Police said by that point Pollo had called dispatchers and "admitted to lying about the presence of a firearm and shots (being) fired." When officers went to her residence, they said she confirmed she had "lied during her phone complaint" and was booked into the jail for falsification.
Grumpy: A woman in the 1300 block of Jefferson Street told police children were "playing basketball in the street, hitting other people's property and her vehicle" with the ball and complained they were being "loud and disruptive to the peace of the neighborhood," Thursday. The kids told police they had the hoop on the sidewalk when the woman came out and told them "the sidewalk was her property (and) they could not place it there," then when they moved it to the alley they claimed her husband "moved his vehicle to where they were playing so that it was ... in the way and getting hit by the ball." Police told the woman the sidewalk is public property and the kids could play ball there if they want. Police told her the kids could continue to play basketball as long as they were not damaging other peoples' property," and when she complained they were "being too loud and needed to go somewhere else to play" they told her they weren't going to make the kids leave the area.
Big bite: A woman in the 400 block of South Fifth Street told police she and her boyfriend had a physical altercation, but she didn't want to pursue charges and refused medical attention, Thursday. The boyfriend admitted they'd been arguing but said she attacked him, so he pinned her down and when he did, she bit him. Police said his thumb was bleeding, but he also refused medical attention and didn't want to file charges.
