STEUBENVILLE -- What was it really like to fight as a soldier during the American Revolution? How did military tactics shape the battlefield and what role did Baron Friedrich von Steuben play in transforming the Continental Army into a more disciplined and effective fighting force?
These questions will be explored during the final lecture in Historic Fort Steuben’s America 250 Lecture Series at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Fort Steuben Visitor Center.
Titled “Infantry and Battle in the Age of Baron Steuben,” the presentation will be given by Alexander S. Burns, assistant professor at Franciscan University of Steubenville and author of “Infantry in Battle, 1733-1783.”
Burns will examine the realities of infantry combat during the Revolutionary War, including the tactics and experiences of the soldiers who fought on the battlefield. The lecture will explore the life and legacy of Baron von Steuben, whose training and military expertise helped shape the Continental Army during a critical period in the struggle for American independence.
Best known for his work at Valley Forge, von Steuben introduced standardized drills, improved military discipline and helped establish practices that strengthened the Continental Army. His influence extended beyond the training ground, helping prepare American soldiers to face the challenges of fighting a professional British army.
The lecture offers an opportunity to look beyond the major battles and familiar names of the Revolution to better understand the men who fought, the tactics they employed and the military changes that helped secure American independence.
The America 250 Lecture Series has explored the history of the Ohio Valley and the American Revolution as the nation commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026.
The program will begin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Fort Steuben Visitor Center, 120 S. Third St. The lecture is free and open to the public.
