WEIRTON -- The Fort Steuben Chapter DAR met Sept. 12 at Gio’s restaurant.
The meeting was called to order by Regent Janet Rymer at noon.
Chapter members held a special service project in honor of the 25 years since the first responders risked their lives running into the smoke-filled buildings on 9/11. Members brought snacks and gift cards for local first responders in Weirton and Steubenville.
Member Shana Wydra, STEM director at Steubenville City Schools, presented a community partnership documentary commemorating the 25th anniversary of Sept. 11. Students in Natalie Campana’s audiovisual class put the stories and pictures together and learned about the work of the first responders on that day.
Rymer presented certificates to veterans who are now first responders in the Steubenville Police Department, Capt. John Lemal and Detective Brandon Kelly. Both were featured in the documentary.
Chaplain Griselda Taylor, Registrar Marsha Cable and Rymer welcomed new DAR member Janine Turturice and associate members Jane Burkett and Rebecca Michelucci-Braun to the Fort Steuben Chapter.
Rymer and Taylor led a memorial for members who died last year: Alice Potts, Mary Minor Evans, Millicent Koos and Second Vice Regent Sue Davidson.
Karen Blanc offered an update on the JAC contest, gave the national defense report and the days to fly the flag. Rymer, Registrar Secretary Joseph, Tammy Kotyk and Treasurer Patti D’Aurora gave their respective reports.
Patti D’Aurora spoke under old business about the ceremony for Underrepresented Patriots, Arnold Dorman and Abraham Moore, which will be held at 11 a.m. Oct. 24 at Union Cemetery. The Ebenezer Zane Chapter of the SAR will join the DAR members and the event is open to the community.
America 250 Chair Francine Hauldren reported that both Steubenville and Weirton mayors issued Constitution Week Proclamations. Griselda Taylor dressed as Martha Washington and read the Preamble and members were reminded to ring bells on Sept. 17, the day the Constitution was signed.
Vickie Joseph invited members to join her for a trip to Seton Hill University to tour the American tapestry collection.
The next meeting will be held at noon Oct. 10 at Historic Fort Steuben. It will be a conservation meeting featuring West Virginia award-winning beekeepers Mike and Dene Ryan.
Members are reminded that this is the regular DAR day of service and Patti D’Aurora will be collecting packages of tuna for the cancer patients.
