PERI to meet Wednesday
STEUBENVILLE -- Public Employees Retirement Inc. will hold its monthly meeting at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Scafidi’s Restaurant and Tavern, 350 S. Hollywood Blvd.
Members of the former Columbiana PERI Chapter are welcome to attend.
Soup, sandwich sale set
WELLSBURG -- St John Church, 1300 Charles St., will be the location of Wednesday’s Altar and Rosary Society’s soup and sandwich sale.
There will be a variety of soups, including bean and ham, chicken noodle and stuffed pepper soup. Sandwiches will include Italian meat and cheese hoagies, Italian roast beef, egg salad, BBQ ham and Chicken salad croissants. Homemade desserts will be available.
The lunch starts at 11 a.m. and runs until the foot is sold out. Call (304) 737-6805 to preorder after 10:30 a.m.
Veterans Service Commission to meet
STEUBENVILLE -- The Veterans Service Commission of Jefferson County will hold its regular monthly meeting at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The meeting will be held in Suite 310 of the Jefferson County Tower, 310 Market St.
All veterans and interested parties and welcome to attend.
DD board to meet
STEUBENVILLE -- The Jefferson County Board of Developmental Disabilities will meet in regular session at 4;15 p.m. Thursday.
The meeting will be held in the conference room at 250 John Scott Highway.
To participate, call the board offices at (740) 264-5812 before Oct. 15 so arrangement can be made.
Retired teachers meet
WINTERSVILLE -- The Jefferson County Retired Teachers Association met Sept. 8 at the Wintersville Methodist Church. The meeting was called to order by President Gina Judy.
Larry Coleman informed members that 1,251 volunteer hours had been reported. Barbara Pritts reported Ohio contributes 14 percent into the STRS retirement fund. It is one of the lowest in the nation. If property taxes are abolished, it will hurt all areas, she said.
The Pleasant Hill School House Historical Museum had its door repaired and painted by the Belmont College restoration class. An open house was held Sept. 13.
Chris DeMarco spoke in the absence of Robin Rayfield, and reported Ohio teachers are falling behind with inflation. Education choice has funneled money to private schools whose students can afford it. HB 719 proposed changing the representation of the STRS board, but it has remained the same, the report continued.
Ron McKillip from STRS gave health insurance updates. Premiums are going up 10 percent, but dental and vision will remain the same. Open enrollment ends the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Webinars will be offered Oct. 26 and Oct. 28 and Nov. 2 and Nov. 4 for Medicare and non-Medicare members.
