Library, humane society to dedicate new kitten adoption center
STEUBENVILLE -- The Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County, Friends of PLSJ and the Jefferson County Humane Society will celebrate their community collaboration with a ribbon-cutting and dedication of a new kitten adoption center at the Schiappa Branch at 4 p.m. Thursday.
The public is invited to attend the celebration. The event will include feline-themed treats and a children's craft beginning at 3:30 p.m., along with an opportunity to see the new enclosure and celebrate the kittens, humane society volunteers, library staff and community supporters who have helped make the program a success.
The adoption center began in 2023, when the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County partnered with the Jefferson County Humane Society as part of the library's Tails and Tales summer reading program. The kittens quickly became popular with library visitors and staff. What was originally envisioned as a temporary summer-reading installation became a permanent fixture.
The collaboration has continued because each organization brings something different to the effort.
The humane society provides the kittens, supplies and daily care through its dedicated volunteers, while library staff provide additional socialization and attention when their schedules permit. Library patrons have the opportunity to interact with the kittens and, sometimes, fall in love with a new member of the family.
Friends of PLSJ has long promoted the kittens at the Schiappa Branch and wanted to help ensure the successful collaboration continues for years to come.
Earlier this year, Friends of PLSJ applied for and received a grant from the Nancy Kay Croner Trust to make the next stage of the project possible: a custom-designed adoption enclosure that maximizes vertical space and provides more room and comfort for adoptable kittens without significantly increasing the footprint of the original enclosure.
The public can meet the kittens, participate in a craft and tour the new kitten adoption center during Thursday's celebration.
