PITTSBURGH -- The Senator John Heinz History Center and Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village will take visitors on a journey through Western Pennsylvania’s prehistoric past during a special Ice Age Expedition day trip featuring expert-led tours at both museums from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 26.
The day will begin at the history center with a guided tour of the museum’s new exhibition, "Planet Ice: Mysteries of the Ice Ages," led by Chief Historian Anne Madarasz. The tour will explore how glaciers and changing climates transformed the region and examine the people and animals that adapted to survive during the Ice Age.
Following the Planet Ice tour, participants will board a motorcoach to Meadowcroft, located in Avella, where Director Dave Scofield will lead a private tour of the internationally renowned rockshelter. The historic site preserves evidence of human habitation dating back 19,000 years and offers a unique look at some of the earliest people to call the region home.
Participants will have the opportunity to explore Meadowcroft’s historic villages, try using a prehistoric spear-thrower known as the atlatl and experience the site’s scenic surroundings.
Tickets are $75 for history center members and $90 for nonmembers and include admission to both sites, motorcoach transportation and lunch.
