Tearin' Up the Turf turns 21
RICHMOND -- Area high school marching bands will gather Sept. 12 for Tearin' Up the Turf XXI at Cartwright Memorial Stadium at the Edison Unified Sports Complex.
Gates open at 6 p.m., with the show beginning at 7 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for senior citizens and students and free for children 5 and younger.
The Edison Wildcat Marching Band has hosted the event for 21 years. New band director Matthew Ohlin took over from predecessor and event creator Marc Sansone.
The festival will feature performances of music from the participating bands' halftime shows. This year's participants include Toronto, Wellsville, Oak Glen, Weir, Steubenville Catholic Central, Steubenville Big Red and Harrison Central high schools.
Edison's 60-member band will perform classic rock and modern female rock songs, including Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" and "Stairway to Heaven."
The EHS Band Boosters also will sell T-shirts and concessions to benefit the band program.

American Legion Auxiliary plans breakfast, bake sale
STEUBENVILLE -- The American Legion Post 33 Ladies Auxiliary will hold a breakfast and bake sale from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 13 at 808 N. Fifth St.
Proceeds will benefit the group's Nursing Home Veterans Christmas Party.

Airport authority to meet
WINTERSVILLE -- The Jefferson County Regional Airport Authority Board of Trustees will meet in regular session at 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, in the Gary R. Folden Conference Room at the Ralph Freshwater Terminal Building at the Jefferson County Airpark, 600 Airpark Drive.
Revival planned in Weirton
WEIRTON -- First Baptist Church of Weirton will hold a two-night revival Sept. 18-19 at the church, 307 Homewood Ave.
Friday's program, from 6-7 p.m., will include music by Meadow McCombs and Pucci Family and Friends, followed by music and preaching by Brent Kimball.
Saturday's program, from 6-9 p.m., will feature music by Pucci Family and Friends, preaching by Pastor Jonathan Stokes, congregational singing and a closing sermon by Dr. Aldo Pucci.
The public is invited.
Ohio Receives $50 Million Talent Search Grant
COLUMBUS -- Ohio has been awarded a $50 million federal Talent Search grant to support low-income and first-generation college students, Gov. Mike DeWine and Ohio Department of Higher Education Chancellor Mike Duffey announced.
Ohio will receive $10 million annually for five years to support 20,000 students each year at 130 schools. The program will place advisers in middle and high schools to connect students with tutoring, career exploration, college application assistance and apprenticeship opportunities.
The grant application includes partnerships with College Now, ESC of Central Ohio, Sinclair Community College, Toledo Tomorrow, the GRIT Project, Junior Achievement and the Cincinnati Youth Collaborative.
West Virginia Squirrel Season Opens Sept. 12
SOUTH CHARLESTON -- West Virginia's regular squirrel season will open statewide Sept. 12 and continue through Feb. 28, 2027, according to the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.
The daily bag limit is six squirrels with a possession limit of 24. There is no season limit. Hunters are encouraged to review current hunting regulations and safety guidelines before heading into the field.
Hunting licenses are required and can be purchased online through the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.
Library to Host Art & Craft Festival
STEUBENVILLE -- The Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County will host its first Art & Craft Festival from noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 26 at Belleview Park.
Vendors will showcase handmade and local art, crafts, food and more. Activities will include a paint station, chalk art, rock art and an Art Walk featuring information about painters and artwork. Participants who complete the Art Walk can pick up a prize at the festival.
Library Offers Fall Programs
STEUBENVILLE -- The Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County will offer a variety of programs throughout its branches this month.
At the Main Library, adults can create a seasonal decoration from bottle caps at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 23. Children ages 7-12 can take part in "Flip a Page, Become the Story" with author Dustin Heavilin at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 22.
Programs also are planned at the Adena, Bergholz, Brilliant, Dillonvale, Schiappa, Tiltonsville and Toronto branches, including alphabet activities, fall crafts, budgeting instruction, coloring, book clubs, Dungeons & Dragons and movie mornings.
