WMC Foundation launches Building a Healthier Community Grants Program

By From STAFF REPORTS 2 min read

WEIRTON -- As WVU Medicine Weirton Medical Center makes historic investments in the future of health care, it also is investing directly in the communities it serves.

The newly established WMC Foundation Inc., the philanthropic arm of WVU Medicine Weirton Medical Center, has launched its inaugural Building a Healthier Community Grants Program, providing funding opportunities for nonprofit organizations working to improve the health and well-being of residents throughout the region.

Applications are being accepted through Sept. 4. Eligible organizations may serve Hancock, Brooke and Jefferson counties, as well as neighboring communities where WVU Medicine Weirton Medical Center patients reside.

Applications are available online at https://wvumedicine.org/locations/weirton/campaign/?id=161.

The WMC Foundation was established on the belief that building a healthier community requires more than exceptional medical care. Through the grant program, the foundation seeks to support nonprofit organizations whose work improves the physical, mental, social and economic well-being of local communities.

"The establishment of the WMC Foundation marks an exciting new chapter for our hospital and the communities we serve," said David Artman, president and CEO of WVU Medicine Weirton Medical Center. "The Foundation will provide meaningful opportunities for businesses and community partners to invest in the health and well-being of Weirton and the northern Ohio Valley. Together, we can help ensure access to exceptional care, support innovative programs and improve the lives of those who call this region home."

The foundation’s launch comes as the medical center continues a major period of growth. Investments underway include construction of a new Cancer Center, expansion of the Emergency Department, new specialty services, advanced technology and other improvements aimed at bringing advanced care closer to home.

Ryan Weld, chair of the WMC Foundation, said the grant program extends the hospital’s commitment to improving lives beyond traditional health care.

"For decades, this hospital has cared for our community, and the WMC Foundation now allows us to extend that mission," Weld said. "By directly investing in health and wellness initiatives throughout Weirton and the surrounding region, we will be able to forge partnerships that address the needs of our community in new and lasting ways."

Organizations applying should demonstrate how their programs or projects improve the health and well-being of the communities they serve. The foundation is accepting proposals addressing a broad range of community needs that contribute to healthier lives.
