Contributed DRESS UP – Teen girls can browse formal gowns during the “Say Yes to the Dress” sale at Hills Elementary School. The event returns Aug. 15 to help students find affordable dresses while supporting the school’s PBIS program.

MINGO JUNCTION -- Teen girls looking forward to homecoming, prom and other formal events can search for their perfect gown during the "Say Yes to the Dress" sale at Hills Elementary School.

The fundraising event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 15 in the school gymnasium at 2281 Wilson Ave. in Mingo Junction.

Organizer A.J. Renner, a teacher and character education director at the school, said a previous sale was successful and she hopes to continue the momentum while generating proceeds to support Hills Elementary's Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program.

"We held a sale in 2017 or 2018 and it went well," she said, adding that none occurred after COVID. "It's a nice way to find an affordable dress and a safe place to find it. We hope to have at least 20 tables and I have 10 so far. The money goes back to PBIS, so every nine weeks we do an incentive where all of the kids can participate. This is a positive way to put money back into the school."

After speaking with girls who were interested in selling their dresses, Renner decided to hold the sale to benefit both the students and the school.

People looking to buy or sell dresses may participate. Sellers pay a $20 rental fee for their table and may bring racks to display formal gowns and cocktail dresses. Setup begins at 9 a.m.

Private dressing rooms will be available, while a local seamstress will advertise her services and share helpful resources. Middle school students also are volunteering their time to help manage the doors and assist guests.

"It's a one-stop shop with homecoming, formal and semi-formal dresses," Renner said. "It's open to area residents. We have sellers from Indian Creek, Buckeye Local and Steubenville."

The sale will take place during Mingo Community Days, and Renner said mothers and daughters can stop by to browse the available selections.

Sellers must send or bring their rental fee to the school by Aug. 13. Checks should be made payable to the Indian Creek Local School District with "Hills Elementary Say Yes to the Dress Sale" written on the memo line.
