STEUBENVILLE POLICE
Tough love: A Woodland Avenue man told police his brother "was stealing from their grandfather and keeping him at home against his will" Friday. When they went to granddad's home, both he and his brother told them "nothing of the sort was taking place" and the caller "was only upset because he is not allowed to return (there)." Granddad said if the caller could "get clean and return to rehab," he'd be allowed to come back but he's unwilling to do that "so he is not permitted to be in the house."
Game changer: A city resident arguing with her ex-boyfriend Friday said she'd told him he could take their child for the weekend only to find out he had a new girlfriend, so she changed her mind. Mom said when she realized there was a new girlfriend that she did not know" in his car, she decided "she was not comfortable" sending her child with them.
Keeping tabs: An Oak Grove Avenue woman was upset Friday because she hadn't seen her ex-boyfriend in nearly a week. She said she last spoke to him Aug. 14 and said "the last few days whenever she calls him the call goes straight to voice mail." She said he'd told her he was going to be visiting his sister and has been working as a handyman on a farm in Pennsylvania but she didn't know the address. Dispatchers checked with local hospitals but he hadn't been admitted.
Tough way to live: A city resident told police Friday he's hearing voices and is convinced the CIA is "using some sort of mechanical device" that "allows individuals to speak with him telepathically." He said he was previously diagnosed with schizophrenia but believes it was a mistake, though police explained to him it's hard for individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia or conditions like it to recognize the symptoms and how it's affecting their lives. He also admitted he hasn't been taking his medication but told police he doesn't want to hurt himself or anyone else before leaving the area.
Not there: Police were asked Friday to check Belleview Park near the ballfields for a homeless encampment but didn't find one.
Fire ball: Someone reported seeing juveniles in the 1200 block of Lincoln Avenue "throwing aerosol cans into a fire" Saturday. Police said they spoke to a large group of juveniles "and the parent in charge of them," advising them of the dangers of such action, and they said it would.
Fraud victim: A Cleveland Avenue resident discovered someone opened a $5,000 credit line in his name without his knowledge Saturday. He said the thief spent $3,430 before LifeLock froze the account, halting all transactions.
Woman charged: Employees at Walmart alleged a woman tried to leave the store Sunday with a shopping cart full of merchandise she hadn't paid for. Police charged Kaitlyn E. Kleiner, 24, 720 N. 7th St., Apt. 11, Steubenville, with misdemeanor theft. More than $900 in merchandise was in the cart, employees report.
Ended badly: A Market Street resident said she invited her ex-boyfriend over to help another resident put together medical equipment Sunday but he started drinking and they ended up in an argument during which he allegedly directed "slurs and profanities" toward his ex and her family. Another male heard the exchange and the two of them "began to argue and push each other." Security was able to get him off the property, and when police located him he confirmed he'd gone to her building to help the other resident but while there "was told some upsetting information about his grandchildren." He said he "calmly" tried to discuss it with her but she began arguing with him. Police said he initially denied using profane language and raising his voice but finally admitted he'd done it, but continued to insist he hadn't used slurs. He said the male followed him to the 200 block of N. 7th Street "and punched him in the face" but police said he had no visible injuries. He was advised to stay away from his ex's building.
Booked: Otis E. Allen Jr., 49, 732 N. 6th St., Steubenville, criminal trespass. Allen was taken into custody Friday after employees at a fast-food restaurant in the 21000 block of Sunset Boulevard reported he was "approaching customers in the drive-thru line," but left the property on foot. While police were out looking for Allen, employees called back to report he'd returned to the eatery and was asked "multiple times" to leave the property but didn't.
Throwing stones: A caller in the 800 block of Broadway Boulevard reported seeing juveniles throwing rocks at houses. He said he didn't need to speak with police because he didn't see any damage to his property. They checked the area but didn't find any kids out.
Gone: A man who left his cell phone on the counter at the Coen station Friday said somebody grabbed it before he got back for it.
Overindulged: Someone reported seeing a man passed out in a yard in the 2400 block of Sunset Boulevard Sunday. Police said the man "appeared to be intoxicated" but he told them he'd been separated from his family and didn't have a phone. Police took him home and handed him over to his wife.
Noise complaint: A caller in the 800 block of Longford Drive complained about excessive noise Sunday. Police told a resident to keep the noise down but returned after a caller reported a crowd gathering in his front yard. He said everyone was leaving for the night.
Cited: Gary Yarosz, 40, 1115 County Road 56, Toronto, driving under suspension; Mileena Parks, 30, 78 Woodmont Ave., Steubenville, stop sign violation.

Walk-in arrested: A Tiltonsville resident said a stranger had broken into her residence and was standing in her kitchen Saturday. She told deputies he'd "booted in" the front door but they'd initially believed it was outside noise, and it wasn't until they heard the door slam to their upstairs that they knew someone was inside who was not supposed to be there. While in the house he helped himself to macaroni and cheese intended for her child. Deputies said Ryan Crawford, 24, 111 W. Main St., Richmond, was charged with criminal trespass and burglary as well as criminal damaging.
Woman assaulted: An area resident said an individual came into her home, assaulted her and stole her medication as well as her debit card Friday. She said he was not allowed at the residence but came anyway and that he'd punched her. Deputies said she had a black eye and bruises on her arm. They searched for him without success.
Covered up: A Two Ridge Road resident said she'd been in an argument with her boyfriend and he spit on her Saturday. When they arrived at her residence, she told deputies he'd left but allowed them to check the residence to be sure. He was found hiding under a "large pile of clothes" in a back bedroom and told deputies the argument dealt with relationship issues.
Scam calls: An Adena man said his wife is getting calls from a woman claiming she had her dog. She said the caller claims she took the dog from a Martins Ferry park and wants it back. The caller said they do have a dog but had adopted it at a shelter three years ago. When deputies called the number, the woman who answered said she's never had a dog.
Property dispute: A woman sleeping in a truck in the Amsterdam area Saturday told police her residence had been condemned and she was packing her things to leave, but her ex was upset because she was selling the property. She said he called to argue and was cursing at her but when she told him to stop he did. She was worried he might stop by the property and cause a problem.
