Rogers Park Flea Market rescheduled for Aug. 29
AMSTERDAM -- The first annual Rogers Park Flea Market has been rescheduled for Aug. 29 due to the forecasted thunderstorms on the event's original Aug. 8 date.
The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Rogers Park and will feature vendors, food trucks, drink vendors, raffles and activities for the community.
Organizers are seeking volunteers to assist with traffic, ticket sales and keeping the park clean. Donations of basketballs, pop and water for the community also are being accepted.
Brianna Whitehead will offer $5 nail trims near the dog park, and organizers are seeking a local produce grower interested in setting up a stand.
Vendors can set up the day of the event by choosing a location. The vendor fee is $20, and alcohol sales are not permitted.
Raffles throughout the day will include a Bang Bang Raffle, Lottery Tree Basket, 50/50 drawing and a final drawing for a $250 gas card.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Amsterdam VFW, Amsterdam Fire Department, Edison Youth Baseball & Softball and United Way.
Custom shirts celebrating the event's first year also will be available.

Franciscan University to host Sacred Music Leadership Summit
STEUBENVILLE -- Franciscan University of Steubenville will host the Sacred Music Leadership Summit Oct. 16-17, 2026, bringing together Catholic leaders seeking to strengthen music programs in parishes and schools.
The two-day event is designed for priests, parish staff, music directors, principals, parish council members and other Catholic leaders. The summit will feature presentations, hands-on workshops, collaborative planning sessions and discussions focused on developing sacred music programs that enhance worship and community life.
Participants will explore ways to combine the Church's theological vision for sacred music with practical strategies for building sustainable programs.
"Sacred music is not merely an ornament added to the liturgy. It is one of the Church's most powerful means of lifting hearts and minds to God," said Dr. Vincent E. Rone, associate professor of fine arts and director of Franciscan University's Sacred Music Program.
The summit will be co-sponsored by the Catholic Institute of Sacred Music and led by Dr. Jennifer Donelson-Nowicka, professor and director of Sacred Music at St. Patrick's Seminary in Menlo Park, California, and founding director of CISM.
The event will begin Oct. 16 with Donelson-Nowicka's presentation, "Thinking With the Mind of the Church About Parish and School Music Programs." Additional sessions will focus on sacred music's role in Christian life, program planning and practical approaches to leading music ministries.
Donelson-Nowicka also will present "The Musical Language of Prayer" at 7 p.m. Oct. 16 in Christ the King Chapel as part of an evening session open to Franciscan University students.
Workshops on Oct. 17 will cover topics including training singers, leading rehearsals, planning music programs and preparing the sacred liturgy. The summit will conclude with a sung Mass at 5 p.m. in Christ the King Chapel, followed by an optional dinner and question-and-answer session.
The summit begins at 1 p.m. Oct. 16 and concludes the evening of Oct. 17. Registration is available through Franciscan University's website.
Passenger killed, three injured in Route 30 crash
EAST LIVERPOOL -- One person was killed and three others injured Wednesday morning following a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Route 30 in Liverpool Township.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol's Lisbon Post reported Joyce M. Snider, 63, of East Liverpool, a passenger in a 2007 Buick Rainier, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The patrol said the Buick, driven by Stacy L. Click, 42, of East Liverpool, was stopped westbound partially on the shoulder and travel lane when it was struck from behind by a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD driven by Neil A. Gilbert, 23, of Martins Ferry.
Click was flown to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh with serious injuries. A child passenger was transported to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Gilbert suffered minor injuries.
The crash remains under investigation. U.S. Route 30 has reopened.
Assisting agencies included local police, fire and EMS departments, the Ohio Department of Transportation and the Columbiana County Coroner's Office.
Christ United Methodist Church to host annual Corn Festival
WEIRTON -- Christ United Methodist Church will host its 19th annual Corn Festival from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at the church, located at 3598 Pennsylvania Ave. in Weirton Heights.
The event will feature corn on the cob, pulled pork, baked beans, coleslaw and Texas sheet cake.
Admission at the door is $14 for adults, $7 for children ages 6-12 and free for children younger than 6. Corn also will be available for purchase.
Christ United Methodist Church is part of the Weirton United Methodist Charge, with Holly Greaver serving as minister.
Proceeds will support the church's mission efforts.
Ohio ranks 16th for states with most underprivileged children, report finds
COLUMBUS -- Ohio ranks 16th among states and the District of Columbia for having the most underprivileged children, according to a new report released by personal finance company WalletHub.
The report, released during August's recognition of Child Support Awareness Month, examined 25 indicators of child need across all 50 states and Washington, D.C. The analysis considered factors including child poverty, food insecurity, maltreatment, uninsured children and other measures of hardship.
WalletHub reported that about one in seven children in the United States live in poverty.
Ohio ranked 15th for the percentage of children living in households below the poverty line, 27th for the percentage of maltreated children, 13th for child food insecurity, 25th for the percentage of uninsured children, 10th for infant mortality rate, 17th for the percentage of children in foster care and 12th for the percentage of children living in single-parent families.
