Buckeye students to receive free meals
DILLONVALE -- Students in Buckeye Local Schools will again receive free breakfasts and lunches this school year through the district's participation in a U.S. Department of Agriculture program.
Superintendent Coy Sudvary said the program is beneficial to families in the community. Participation depends in part on the percentage of students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals, so eligible families are encouraged to submit applications.
The district also must maintain sufficient participation in the program. Schools track the number of breakfasts and lunches served, including through a digital student number system at the high school.
Sudvary said the district and its food vendor, The Nutrition Group, monitor which entrees are most popular and invite students to provide menu suggestions.
WorkForce West Virginia announces virtual job fair
CHARLESTON -- WorkForce West Virginia will hold a Statewide Virtual Job Fair from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 2.
Registration is required for employers and job seekers. Registration and additional information are available at workforcewv.org.
Franciscan students spend summer serving others
STEUBENVILLE -- Thirty-three Franciscan University of Steubenville students spent their summer serving others through the university's Missions of Peace program.
Thirteen students remained in Steubenville and nearby Pittsburgh, volunteering with organizations including St. Anthony House, Urban Thrift, the Friendship Room, a local food pantry and the Red Door ministry.
Twenty students traveled to Olón, Ecuador, for nearly three weeks of ministry at the Fundación Santa María del Fiat and Santa María del Fiat School. Students helped with English lessons and spent afternoons assisting children with homework, sports, music, chores and other activities.
"It's mainly a relational ministry," said Christopher Clark, a junior psychology and theology double major who served as a mission co-leader. "What we're there to do is just love them and show them the love of Christ."
The summer missions were part of a larger year of service in which 215 Franciscan students participated in 13 mission trips around the world.
The university also plans to add a third summer mission in 2027. From May 10-21, students will serve in Anchorage, Valdez and Wasilla, Alaska.
