Great Trail Festival Set for Labor Day Weekend
MALVERN -- The 46th annual Great Trail Festival will be held Sept. 5-7 at 6331 Canton Road in Malvern. The French and Indian-era re-creation near the Great Indian Trail will feature an 18th-century marketplace, artisans and demonstrations of traditional crafts.
Activities will include music, Scottish pipers, fiddlers, clog dancers, buckskinners, fur trappers, campfires, teepee lodges, cannon firing and tomahawk throwing. The Ohio Tomahawk Throwing Championship will be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 7.
Food will include ham and bean soup, johnnycakes, buffalo burgers, Indian fry bread, hot apple dumplings, funnel cakes, popcorn and other treats. The festival also will feature the re-establishment of American buffalo in Carroll County.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for senior citizens and $5 for youth ages 12-18. Children under 12 are admitted free. Parking is free.
WIC breastfeeding awareness event set
STEUBENVILLE -- The WIC Breastfeeding Awareness Month Game Day will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today in the second floor community room at the Jefferson County Tower, 500 Market St. (the same building the WIC office is located.)
Open to all pregnant, breastfeeding, pumping and formerly breastfeeding mothers, participants don’t need to be receiving WIC to attend.
A make-your-own fruit and vegetable wash activity will be conducted, breastfeeding supplies will be available and walking tacos and banana splits will be featured/
Retired teachers to meet
WINTERSVILLE -- The Jefferson County Retired Teachers will meet for a business meeting at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 8 at Wintersville Methodist Church’s Center for Hope, located at the corner of Main Street and Fernwood Road.
Luncheon reservations are due to Gina Judy by Monday.
Guest speakers will be Ron McKillip, STRS health insurance representative, and Dr. Robin Rayfield, the executive director of ORTA, who will provide updates for members.
The community project for the meeting will be the Tear program and Cancer Initiative Group food bank.
Any active or retired teacher is welcome to join the association at any time.
Brooke County Library Offers Programs
WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County Public Library will offer an Evening Explore & Learn Storytime with Miss Kim at 5 p.m. Sept. 3, featuring a story and hands-on activities. Space is limited and registration is required by calling 304-737-1551 or visiting brookecountylibs.org/events.
The library also offers free Geri-Fit strength-training classes at the Follansbee Library from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and at the Brooke County Public Library in Wellsburg from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. Tuesdays and Fridays. MADD, Law Enforcement Plan Labor Day Impaired Driving Enforcement
WHEELING -- Mothers Against Drunk Driving West Virginia and law enforcement agencies across the state will participate in "Saturation Saturday" on Aug. 29 to increase enforcement against impaired driving ahead of Labor Day weekend.
The initiative will include increased DUI patrols involving Bethlehem, West Liberty, Wheeling, Weirton, Glen Dale, Moundsville, Morgan County, Jackson County, Barboursville, Huntington and Ravenswood law enforcement agencies. The effort is being conducted in conjunction with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign.
According to NHTSA, 451 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes during the 2024 Labor Day weekend period. MADD officials urged motorists to plan for a safe ride home and avoid driving while impaired.
