Open house Sunday at Richmond museum
RICHMOND -- The Richmond Community Historical Society will wrap up its summer open house series this month with the Crew House Museum open Sunday and Aug. 23.
On both dates, the museum located at 34 W. Main St. will be open from noon to 4 p.m. Historical society volunteers will be on hand to field questions about the building which is marking its 200th birthday this year.
There is no admission but donations are appreciated, according to officials.
Among the many historic items available to see, one newer attraction includes the contents of a time capsule created in 1976 during the nation’s bicentennial year. The time capsule was opened on June 28 at Richmond Park when the Richmond Lions Club held a community picnic in honor of the nation’s 250th anniversary.
On Quaker Day, the historical society’s annual fundraiser, a highlight of the festival will be the creation of a new time capsule as a historical gesture to mark the nation’s semiquincentennial. The new time capsule will be opened in 2076. Quaker Day will be held Sept. 26 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Items available for purchase at the museum include Richmond crocks, $25; Richmond mugs, $12; Richmond history books, $10; and new Richmond Crew House, 1826-2026 badges for a donation.
The historical society’s next meeting will be held at the Crew House on Sept. 8 at 7 p.m.
Election board to meet
STEUBENVILLE--The Jefferson County Board of Election’s August meeting will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday.
The agenda includes a discussion of moving four precincts from the former Froehlich’s Classic Corner because the building has been sold “and we can no longer use it as a polling place,” Director Robert Gale said.
Veterans Service Commission to meet
STEUBENVILLE -- The regular monthly meeting of the Veterans Service Commission of Jefferson County will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The meeting will be held at Suite 310, 500 Market St.
All veterans and interested parties are welcome to attend.
Gospel group to appear
WEIRTON -- The Weirton Heights Memorial Baptist Church, 121 Ivy Street, Weirton, will host the gospel group the Needhams at 10 a.m. Aug 23.
It is a group of faithful Christian recording artists and messengers of God who travel the country sharing their faith through music and testimony.
The church said its doors are open to anyone who wants to listen to and enjoy the concert.
Bookmobile announces weekly schedule
STEUBENVILLE -- The Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County’s bookmobile will be off the road Monday. Service will resume Tuesday with stops from 10-10:45 a.m. at Grammy’s Diner in Amsterdam, 11-11:45 a.m. at the Bergholz Volunteer Fire Department and a 12:15 p.m. home delivery on Red Dog Road. On Wednesday, the bookmobile will make home deliveries beginning at 8 a.m. before stopping at the Mingo Senior Center from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Thursday’s schedule includes Briarwood from 3-4 p.m. and Ridgewood Apartments in Wintersville from 4-5 p.m. On Friday, the bookmobile will visit the Brush Creek Community Building from 10-11 a.m., the Hammondsville Post Office from 11:15-11:45 a.m., Prime Time in Hammondsville from noon-1 p.m. and Riverside Apartments in Toronto from 2-3 p.m.
Weirton museum to host children’s author
WEIRTON - The Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center will welcome author Karina Garrison at 11 a.m., Aug. 15, where she will read her book "Cotton Candy Sky in Sugarcreek."
The book is the first installment in a planned series of children’s book known as "The Snuggle Bug Series," celebrating the beauty, nastalgia, and small-town spirit which inspires her storytelling.
The event is free to the public, with cotton candy available for every child, while supplies last, and light refreshments.
The Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center is located at 3149 Main St., Weirton.
HOME Consortium seats available
WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Commission is accepting letters of interest for two open positions of the Northern Panhandle HOME Consortium Council.
The two-year terms will last through June 30, 2028.
Those interested are asked to send their letters to the Brooke County Clerk’s Office.
Christ United to host annual Corn Festival
WEIRTON -- Christ United Methodist Church will hold its 19th annual Corn Festival from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at the church, 3598 Pennsylvania Ave., Weirton.
The menu will include corn on the cob, pulled pork, baked beans, coleslaw and Texas sheet cake. Admission is $14 for adults, $7 for children ages 6-12 and free for children younger than 6. Corn also will be available for purchase.
Christ United Methodist Church is part of the Weirton United Methodist Charge, with the Rev. Holly Greaver serving as minister. Proceeds will support the church’s mission.
Belmont among counties approved for state disaster aid
COLUMBUS -- Gov. Mike DeWine has authorized the State Disaster Relief Program to assist 13 Ohio counties impacted by severe storms that occurred March 11-16.
The reimbursement program provides supplemental funding to local governments and eligible nonprofit organizations when storm damage does not qualify for federal disaster assistance but meets state requirements. Eligible expenses include debris removal, emergency protective measures and certain infrastructure repairs.
Belmont County is among the counties approved for assistance, along with Carroll, Coshocton, Guernsey, Harrison, Holmes, Knox, Licking, Morrow, Noble, Perry, Tuscarawas and Van Wert counties.
The authorization allows the Ohio Emergency Management Agency to request funding from the Ohio Controlling Board.
