STEUBENVILLE -- History is coming alive this week at the Sycamore Youth Center as 40 students take part in the free Great Historical Battles Camp, a weeklong educational program that combines history, creativity and hands-on learning.

Meeting through Friday, the camp is led by Dr. Sarah Wear, who is guiding students through some of the most pivotal battles in world history while demonstrating how military strategy, leadership and historic events have shaped civilizations.

The week began with a look at the Battle of Marathon in 490 B.C., where students learned how the Greek army, led by Miltiades, defeated a much larger Persian force through careful planning, courage and the strategic use of terrain. Campers also learned the origin of the modern marathon before creating battlefield maps and designing cardboard shields and swords.

The camp continued with a lesson on the Battle of Hastings in 1066, one of the most significant battles in English history. Students explored the contrasting tactics of the Anglo-Saxons and the Normans, learning about the Anglo-Saxon shield wall, the two-handed Danish axe and William the Conqueror’s use of cavalry, archers, infantry and feigned retreats to secure victory.

Rather than simply reading about history, campers experienced it firsthand by building replica shields and weapons before heading outdoors to form shield walls and reenact battle formations.

The activities are designed to make history engaging while encouraging teamwork, critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving.

“History becomes much more meaningful when students can see it, build it, and experience it for themselves,” said Bobbyjon Bauman, executive director of the Sycamore Youth Center. “Wear has an incredible gift for making the past come alive. Through this camp, our students aren’t just learning dates and names--they’re discovering how leadership, strategy, courage and perseverance shaped history in ways that continue to influence our world today.”

The Great Historical Battles Camp is one of 26 free summer camps offered by the Sycamore Youth Center this summer. The camps provide educational and enrichment opportunities for children throughout the Ohio Valley at no cost to families.

Students will spend the remainder of the week exploring additional historic battles through interactive lessons, hands-on projects and reenactments designed to make learning both memorable and fun.
