Rental scam: A city resident told police he paid someone advertising a rental on County Road 45 a total of $1,095 via Chime Tuesday but after they got his money he didn't hear anything more from them. He said when he drove to the address of the property he'd rented he discovered it was already occupied and that he wasn't the only person that was duped.
Throwing things: A Rosswell Avenue resident told police her adult son had argued with her teenaged daughter and threw household items at the girl Tuesday after she asked him to clean up a mess he'd made so she hit him with a trophy. Grandma said she intervened and separated the two of them, then called to have her son removed from her residence. He claimed his niece "was being disrespectful to him, which is why he began to yell at her." He denied throwing anything at the girl but said she did hit him with something, and police said he did have a mark on his shoulder that was bleeding slightly. His mother said he does not live with them and is only there occasionally, so police told him he could make arrangements to retrieve any personal items he had there at a future date.
Two served: Two people were detained after a traffic stop on Wilma at Sunset Boulevard Tuesday. Police said Megan Conry, 43, 232 Cunningham Lane, Steubenville, was booked not the county jail without bond on a bench warrant (Municipal Court). The driver, Melvin Jackson, 62 of the same address was issued a summons for violating a protection order, they said.
Loading up: A caller in the 800 block of N. 4th Street told police he saw strangers entering a vacant property across the street Tuesday and when they left they had a suitcase, so he confronted them. He said the individuals claimed "they were given permission by the owner of the residence to be inside and take things," but said when he quizzed them about the owner "their answers did not make sense." He said the individuals left in an SUV and thinks he knows the street where one of them lives. Police said a door to the garage appeared to have been forced open, but they didn't enter the building because the floor above the garage had fallen into the garage, making it impassable and the structure unsafe.
Dog days: A caller reported a homeowner in the 1500 block of Orchard Street had left a dog out in the heat all day Tuesday. Police located the owner and advised her of the law concerning animals and extreme heat and she took her huskie inside. Police said the dog "did not appear to be in any distress or malnourished."
Privacy concern: A Terrace Avenue resident complained that a neighbor had a camera pointed at his bedroom window Tuesday. Police said they were unable to determine exactly where the camera was pointed.
Needed help: A man sleeping on the sidewalk at the mall told police he was okay but homeless Tuesday. Police contacted Milton Recovery, "and they were able to get (him) placed into another facility for treatment."

Weeded out: An Adena woman told deputies July 14 that her roommate "is antagonizing her and will not stop." She said they were staying there to help fix the property up for the owner, but her roommate "became sober and took her weed and won't stop bothering her." Deputies said she was unable to explain to them what he was doing that was so bothersome. The man said he was going to stay with a friend down the street and planned to stay away from her.
Rental scam II: A tenant living at a County Road 45 property that scammers have advertised as available to rent said July 14 he tried calling the scammer but the thief wouldn't pick up. While deputies were speaking with the resident another victim of the fraud came to his door and reported he'd been taken for $1,070. The scammer requested payment via Chime.

Roughing it: A Hammondsville area resident requested a welfare check July 13 on a family with children allegedly living in a camper with no electric or running water. Deputies said one of the parents showed them a generator running power to the camper and a bulk water container that was to be refilled that day. She told them her fiancé and her kids were staying there while their new house is finished. Deputies said all the kids are clean and healthy.
