WEIRTON - For three decades, the Marland Heights 5K Classic has been a cornerstone of local summer activities, for runners, walkers, and spectators alike.

The 30th-annual Marland Heights 5K Classic Run, Fitness Walk, and Youth Fun Run is set for Aug. 15, with a course to begin and end at Margaret Manson Weir Memorial Park.

"It will be the 30th year," Chris Krishak, programs director for the Weirton Board of Parks and Recreation, which organizes the race, said.

The event will feature the title 5K race, with a 3.1-mile route traveling through portions of Weirton’s Marland Heights neighborhood, as well as a two-mile fitness walk and a series of youth fun run events for those 12 years of age and under.

The youth races will begin at 6:30 p.m., with the main races set for 7 p.m.

Pre-registration for the races is set at $25 for adults, $15 for teenagers, and $3 for the youth fun run, with pre-registration available through the Millsop Community Center, and online, until noon Aug. 13.

Registration for the day of the race will be $30 for adults and $20 for teenagers.

Online registration is available through https://runsignup.com/Race/WV/Weirton/MarlandHeights5KClassic and additional information can be found by calling (304) 797-5721.

A big element is the arrangement of sponsors, to assist with the costs of T-shirts, medals, and various operational costs for the race.

"I’ve been getting the money secured," Krishak said.

He noted water will be available at the start/finish line, as well as at stations along the race course, and the evening will conclude with a cookout and awards ceremony, with awards presented in each race category.

Official timing for the race will be provided by GCXC Race Timing from Columbiana, Ohio.
