Council workshop planned in Follansbee

FOLLANSBEE -- A workshop will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Follansbee Council Chambers.

Teen Killed in Belmont County Motorcycle Crash

ST. CLAIRSVILLE -- A juvenile male from the Dayton area died Saturday after a motorcycle crash on County Road 214 near County Road 30, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the teen was traveling west on a Kawasaki ZX6R when he failed to negotiate a left curve, striking a guardrail and a tree. He died from his injuries.

Belmont County Coroner Amanda Fisher said the driver’s name will not be released because he was under 18.

The driver was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The Neffs Volunteer Fire Department, Belmont County EMS and Belmont County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.

School Clothing Assistance Applications Open July 20

CHARLESTON -- The West Virginia Department of Human Services will begin accepting applications July 20 for the 2026 School Clothing Allowance Program.

Eligible families can receive a $200 benefit per child to purchase school clothing and school supplies. Applications will be accepted through Aug. 15 or until funding is exhausted.

For a family of four, the monthly income limit is $3,483. Benefits will be issued through electronic benefit transfer cards, while foster parents and guardians will receive checks.

Families may apply online, through their local Department of Human Services office or by calling 1-877-716-1212.

Police Investigate Fatal Bicycle Accident

WHEELING -- Wheeling police are investigating the death of a man following an apparent bicycle accident Saturday on Heritage Trail near the Interstate 470 bridge in South Wheeling.

Police and firefighters responded to a medical emergency on the trail about 5:20 p.m. before determining the incident involved a bicycle crash. The man later died from his injuries.

His name has not been released. Officials said there is no ongoing threat to the public, and Heritage Trail remains open.

Vitalant Seeks Blood Donors During Summer Shortage

WHEELING -- Vitalant is urging residents to donate blood as it faces a critical summer shortage of Type O blood.

Anyone who donates through Aug. 8 will be entered into a drawing to win a vehicle. All blood types are needed, with Type O and platelet donations especially important.

Welty Offering Nursing Bonuses, Tuition Assistance

WHEELING -- The Welty Corporation is offering sign-on bonuses and tuition assistance as it seeks registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and certified nursing assistants to fill workforce needs.

The nonprofit senior living provider is offering a $15,000 sign-on bonus for registered and licensed practical nurses and a $10,000 bonus for certified nursing assistants. Employees pursuing RN or LPN credentials are also eligible for full tuition assistance, while on-site CNA classes allow students to earn pay during training.

Morgan Murphy, administrator of Good Shepherd Nursing Home, said flexible scheduling and guaranteed employment are available for employees attending nursing school.

The Welty Corporation operates Good Shepherd Nursing Home, the Welty Home assisted living facility and several independent living communities.
