ALLEY CLOSED INDEFINITEL
STEUBENVILLE — The alley behind 514 and 518 Union Avenue will be closed until further notice due to a sink hole.
City officials report the lines that need fixed are on private property and are the property owner’s responsibility, so the alley will remain closed to traffic until the repairs are done.
RAILWAY SAFETY ACT ADVANCES
WASHINGTON — The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee has advanced the Railway Safety Act, sponsored by Congressman Chris Deluzio (D-PA), as part of the broader BUILD America 250 Act, sending the measure to the House floor for consideration.
The bill, first introduced in 2023 following the Norfolk Southern train derailment in East Palestine was approved out of committee on May 21. Deluzio, who represents Pennsylvania’s 17th District, said he joined the committee in 2024 with the goal of advancing rail safety reforms.
The legislation is part of a larger transportation package and received bipartisan support in committee. It also has backing from rail worker unions and has been endorsed by President Donald Trump.
Deluzio said the measure is intended to strengthen rail safety standards in the wake of the derailment that affected communities in Beaver County, Pa., and East Palestine.
The bill now awaits consideration on the House floor.
