Memorial marker dedication set
ADENA — The Sons of the American Revolution Ebenezer Zane Chapter will hold a memorial grave marker dedication ceremony at 3 p.m. Sunday at Rehoboth Pioneer Cemetery, just outside Adena.
The grave marker is for David Belknap, who enlisted at the age of 17 on Jan. 13, 1778, in Capt. Grant’s Company of Col. Johnson’s Regiment of the Connecticut Militia that fought in the American War for Independence.
After the war, Belknap filed a land claim on Feb. 2, 1807, at the federal land office in Steubenville for a total of 640 acres in what is now Short Creek Township, located around the Blairmont Road area. That area is still referred to as the Belknap Section on Harrison County maps.
Belknap died in 1832 and was buried somewhere on his acreage — his grave is unmarked. The memorial marker placement was supported by the Smithfield Township Trustees, with Trustee Vince Pastre being the coordinator with the Zane SAR Chapter.
Belknap’s marker will be placed alongside three other Revolutionary War veteran memorial markers that already exist at the Rehoboth Cemetery. Ancestors of Belknap will be in attendance, and color guard honors will be delivered by the Zane SAR Chapter. A local bagpiper will provide music.
Remarks will be made by Jeff Turner, SAR Zane Chapter president; Jamie Price, SAR Zane Chapter member (who will represent the Belknap family); and Tammy Hosenfeld, local historian and researcher for the Jefferson County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society. Hosenfeld will provide background information on the cemetery and the Belknap family in early history of Jefferson and Harrison counties.
The chapter also will be dedicating a QR code Revolutionary War veteran information post during the ceremony.
The public is invited to attend the event. Rehoboth Cemetery is just outside Adena on a lane off Smithfield Township Road 130 in Jefferson County. For information, email Price, the event coordinator, at williamjprice@msn.com
