Health District to promote bicycle safety at Saturday Market
Free helmet giveaways, safety course planned as Cycle the City season begins in Steubenville
STEUBENVILLE — The Jefferson County General Health District will promote bicycle safety this weekend at the Saturday Market on Fourth.
The health district will offer free bicycle helmets and safety education for children while supplies last from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday on Fourth Street. Children may bring their bikes and ride a safety obstacle course after being fitted for a helmet.
To help prevent bicycle-related injuries, the JCGHD received bike helmets from the Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics as part of a statewide effort to encourage children to “Put a Lid on It.” Although helmet use can reduce the risk of head injury by 85 percent and severe brain injury by 88 percent, estimates in Ohio indicate only 10 percent to 20 percent of children wear helmets. Aside from automobiles, bicycles are associated with more childhood injuries than any other consumer product, including trampolines, ladders and swimming pools.
Health district officials said bicycle safety is not just for children, adding parents who wear helmets are more likely to encourage their children to do the same.
Saturday also marks the start of the Cycle the City season in collaboration with Strong Towns Steubenville. The monthly community bike ride will take place throughout downtown Steubenville on the third Saturday of each month from May through August.
Participants will meet at the fountain by Historic Fort Steuben at 8:50 a.m.
