Tri-State Community Band sets special show
TORONTO — The Tri-State Community Band is planning a special concert for Mother’s Day.
Members of the band will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday at Toronto High School.
Set to the theme of That’s Entertainment, the afternoon will feature a wide variety of music, from show tunes to the sounds of Benny Goodman and George Gershwin.
There’s no charge to attend, and the show is a perfect event for anyone who enjoys music — moms. family members and friends.
The band, which is made up of musicians from across the Tri-State Area, has scheduled several performances for the next several months, including 6:30 p.m. June 30 at the Toronto Gazebo (Third and Market streets), and 2 p.m. July 18 at Friendship Park.
Other performances will be scheduled, band officials explained.
Knox Township clean-up set
TORONTO — Knox Township will be holding its 2026 JB Green Team Clean-Up event May 14. The Township is extending the event by two additional days to include May 15 and May 16. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day at the township garage located at 25 township Road 247, Toronto.
Tires will be accepted. The following will not be accepted: Food waste, household garbage, construction debris, batteries, any form of liquids, mattresses/box springs or hazardous materials.
Hancock retired school employees meet
CHESTER — The April 21 meeting of the Hancock County Association of Retired School Employees was held at the Peach Tree Inn at the Orchards in Chester. The pledge to the flag was led by Lola Bender and the reading of our motto was led by Martha Roberts. The prayer was said by President Melanie Donofe who called the business meeting to order.
Special thanks were given to Sherry Emery who organized the luncheon.
The minutes were read and approved by Judy Case and second by Wendy Speer. The treasurer report was read and approved by Kathy Barrett and second by Deb Marino.
An update was given about the RIF/transfer hearings for active employees. A further update will be given at the next meeting. With the Legislature done for 2026, it was announced that no bills dealing with anything for retirees were passed.
The WV Association newsletter is now available online. Discussion was held about the HUBS meeting that will take place in Mount Claire, W.Va., in June. Reports will be gathered at the May meeting to be turned into the state in time for the state meeting in June and August. Volunteer hours will need to be turned in at the May meeting.
The 50/50 drawing of $52 was won by Loretta Fisher and free lunch ticket was won by Michelle Ticich.
Door prizes were won by Nancy Wetzel, Rosalie Lebec, Deb Marino, Susan Brown, Dody Nile, Sharon Droppleman, Liz Pugh, Chris Snyder, Deb Coss, Loretta Fisher, Elaine Underwood, Cecelia Clark, Pat Wagner, Rita Orler and Nick Queses.
The next meeting will be held at noon on May 19 at Gio’s Restaurant in Weirton.
