Swing dance returns at coffeehouse

STEUBENVILLE — Swing dancing and the rhythmic sounds of jazz are once again coming to the heart of downtown Steubenville.

Community residents of all ages are invited to attend the upcoming monthly gathering of Steubenville Swing Dance, set to take place from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Feb. 12 on the third-floor ballroom of Leonardo’s Coffeehouse, located at 132 N. Fourth St.

This event continues a tradition of bringing people together through the timeless art of dance.

The atmosphere will be filled with the sounds of live music performed by Matt Hill and the Classics, who are known for their energetic sound that is as elegant as it is a cornerstone to the swing dance experience.

The band’s versatility allows the evening to transition from relaxed social dancing into a more spirited, performance-style atmosphere that keeps attendees moving throughout the evening, according to organizers.

Officials explained Steubenville Swing Dance has steadily grown in popularity.

Recent monthly events have consistently drawn between 50 and 60 dancers.

But the momentum does not stop there. An ambitious goal has been set to welcome 100 dancers to a single event.

Organizers are hoping February will be that month in which they will reach that milestone.

However, they need the help of the community to do so.

Whether one is a seasoned regular or a curious newcomer, the event is designed as an inclusive gathering for all experience levels.

For those who feel they might have “two left feet,” longtime instructors Dan and Mary Selmeczy will be on hand to guide participants through the steps, ensuring everyone feels comfortable on the dance floor.

Admission remains at $10 for singles and $15 for couples, with the price including professional dance instruction, which begins at 7 p.m.

The Selmeczys will cover the basics of the Foxtrot, East Coast Swing, Rumba and the Waltz. Following the lesson, the floor will open for social dancing for the remainder of the evening.

Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to ensure they see the start of the instruction and can enjoy the full experience of the night.

As the Steubenville Swing Dance continues to serve as a growing hub for social interaction and live jazz, the Feb. 12 event offers a unique opportunity for new and returning dancers to share in a night of movement and celebration.

This invitation is an opportunity for residents to step away from their daily routine and become part of the ongoing revitalization in the city’s downtown area.
