Tips for continuing cold weather
While the area continues to see temperatures fluctuating to degrees in the single digits this winter, a few winter safety awareness tips have been announced by area officials.
• Residents should make sure, if they haven’t already, to allow their faucets to drip slowly during the bitter cold in order to keep the pipes from freezing.
• Open the kitchen and bathroom sink cabinets to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing.
• Know where and how to shut off the main water supply in case of a ruptured pipe.
• Never use the stove, oven or grill to heat the house.
• Place space heaters on level, hard surfaces at least three feet from anything flammable and never leave unattended.
• Install carbon monoxide detectors in the home and quickly move to fresh air if the alarm sounds.

McDonald’s opening 24 hours
WEIRTON — As the Weirton Sheetz plans to close its doors for a six-month period, beginning this month, the Weirton McDonald’s restaurant on Three Springs Drive and Potomac Avenue has announced it is extending its hours of operation.
The business will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, according to officials. The restaurant has added four new positions, and is looking to fill 20 additional crew member roles before the end of March due to the added hours.
“We are aware of the needs for our local community,” said Trey Locke, McDonald’s owner and operator. “We decided it was important to fill the void by increasing hours and providing additional job opportunities in the community.”
Employment at McDonald’s provides access to the Archways to Opportunity program. Since 2015, employees at participating restaurant locations can work toward a college degree and earn tuition assistance as well.
