Buckeye Local Culture Fair to be held today
CONNORVILLE — Lions and tigers and bears … oh my.
The Buckeye Local High School Foreign Language Club will be heading back to nature for its 21st-annual International Culture Fair entitled “Get Wild with Culture.” The event, set to take place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today in the school’s commons area, will feature costumes, exhibits, a variety of dishes and animals native to each country.
The club’s co-advisers, Bonnie Soos and Savana McBeth, explained the culture fair will highlight the symbolism behind each feathery and furry creature through a digital presentation of facts.
“They are researching an animal native to their country,” Soos said of the members, noting the digital displays will replace theatrical performances of years past.
Among the areas to be featured are Mexico, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Paraguay, Brazil, Aruba, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Italy, Sweden, Poland, Russia, China, India, the Philippines and Australia.
Admission is free, although food tickets will be sold for 25 cents each to sample an array of foods on hand. The exhibits, food tasting, children’s activities and a 50-50 drawing will run from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the commons. Activities will then continue through 8 p.m. with a Parade of Nations, informational slideshow, awards and music by accordionist Dave Milovac inside the theater.
Soos said the culture fair has come a long way throughout the last two decades, as it first began with a lesson on languages in 2005 and continued with depictions of traditions and art. Hundreds of people attend the popular event each year, Soos noted, adding, “The feedback has been very positive and the crowd grows each year. It has become an annual tradition at Buckeye Local.”
Proceeds from the event will benefit cultural activities and field trips. The club is planning a return trip to Spain in March. The upcoming excursion includes a tour of Andalucia in the southern region — just in time for Holy Week events.
