County to hold car seat giveaway

STEUBENVILLE — The Jefferson County General Health District has partnered with Adoption Circle to hold a county-wide car seat distribution from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 12.

The event will take place on the second floor of the Jefferson County Tower building, located at 500 Market St. in Steubenville.

Car seats will be given to the first 50 Jefferson County residents who register and have a child under the age of 1, according to officials.

To qualify, one must not receive Ohio WIC or Medicaid benefits.

Residents will be able to choose between an infant carrier or a convertible car seat.

Those who receive a seat must register for one of the time slots available to pick up their car seat and attend a brief installation demo.

Officials noted the Ohio Buckles Buckeyes program is available at the Jefferson County General Health District for WIC participants and Medicaid beneficiaries, who meet the criteria.

According to the Ohio Department of Health, motor vehicle injuries are a leading cause of death for children. Many of these deaths can be prevented by using the appropriate car seat, booster seat and seat belts. He use of car seats reduce the risk of death to infants younger than age 1 by 71 percent and to toddlers between the ages of 1 and 4 by 54 percent in passenger vehicles, according of officials.

“Ensuring access to car seats for Jefferson County’s youth is a vital aspect of protecting public health,” event organizers stated. “The Jefferson County General Health District values partnerships with organizations such as the Adoption Circle to provide much-needed resources in our community.”
