Roundtable lecture postponed

WHEELING — The first meeting of the Ohio Valley Civil War Roundtable, scheduled for Thursday, has been postponed due to extreme weather conditions, according to group officials.

The lecture and meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 25 in the auditorium of the Ohio County Public Library in Wheeling. Guest speaker will be St. Clairsville resident Wayne Farley, who will present an examination of the Civil War history of Western Virginia he obtained through his research.

Farley will offer a personal collection of family letters that belonged to the family of William Johnson of Bridgeport, W.Va.

The lecture is free and open to the public. Anyone interested in joining the roundtable can contact Roger Micker at (304) 312-7559. The cost to enroll, per family, is $20 annually.

Writers’ critique group forms

WEIRTON — A new writers’ critique group is being formed in Weirton. Those interested are asked to attend the group’s meetings, held at 5:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of every month. Meetings will take place at Blue Cat Coffee, located at 3246 Main St. in Weirton.

Organizers stated those taking part in the group are doing so for the purpose of wanting to “work together in order to write better.” The first meeting is scheduled for Feb. 3. For information, visit weirtonwrites.com.

Church to hold soup sale

WHEELING — A Soup Showdown is scheduled to be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Feb. 7 at Wayman Church, located at 1136 Eoff St. in Wheeling.

Soups available will include chili, chicken noodle and vegetable. The cost is $8 per quart.

Shoot to benefit local Marine

NEW CUMBERLAND — Area residents are encouraged to attend a benefit turkey shoot for Tyler Rawson, a local Marine and National Guardsman. The shoot will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Chester-Newell Sportsmen Club, located behind Green Valley Dairy on Gas Valley Road in New Cumberland.

According to organizers, regular turkey shoots will begin on Feb. 8 and continue each Sunday through April 12. All shoots begin at 10 a.m., with sign ups starting at 9:30 a.m. The cost, per shot, is $3. Money shots cost $5 each. A cover the dot shoot will award a first- and second-place award.

No shoot will be held on Feb. 22 due to a 60-table Gun Show, scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 21 and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Feb. 22 at the Hancock County Senior Center. Admission to the Gun Show is $5 per person. Those 12 and younger will be free to enter the event but must be in the presence of an adult.

Those wishing to register but do so by Feb. 16. The cost, per table, will be $25 each or $30 for late entrants. Dealer setup will take place from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 21 and from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Feb. 22.

Checks can be made payable to Chester-Newell Sportsmen Club and mailed to the club, in c/o Vance Squires, 45 Kathy Drive, Chester, W.Va. 26034.

Free parking will be available and the kitchen will be open. Proceeds from the Gun Show will benefit the sportmen’s club and the senior center.
