Wreaths Across America to be held Saturday

ADENA — Wreaths Across America will be celebrated on Saturday across the nation.

The nonprofit’s mission is to remember the fallen, honor those who serve and teach children about the value of freedom.

This year, there is a new theme, according to organizers. “Keep Moving Forward,” inspired by the last words of Capt. Joshua Byers, who was killed in action in Fallujah, Iraq, on July 23, 2003, while serving in the Army.

Each year, millions of volunteers and patriots gather in local, state and national cemeteries across all 50 states and abroad, to pay tribute to service members and their families. Most recently, the gatherings have taken place at St. Casimir, Rehoboth, Holmes and Adena Presbyterian cemeteries, according to organizers.

Byers was the company commander when an IED struck his Humvee. As the smoke filled the air, he gave his driver a last command: “… keep moving forward.” Though he didn’t make it home, this command saved lives and became a battle cry for his unit and family.

“There will always be challenges to overcome as individuals, communities and a country, but we must keep moving forward together,” stated Karen Worcester, executive director of Wreaths Across America. “This year, we will share not only the Byers’ story of resilience, but the stories of many others who continue to live with purpose every day and have chosen to keep moving forward.”

Efforts are being made to “keep moving forward” in Adena, which is taking efforts to enhance, beautify and improve old structures and streets. Banners of local veterans will be displayed throughout the town, officials noted.

The ceremony will begin at noon Saturday at St. Casimir Cemetery, located on county Road 6 in Adena, with the placement of wreaths by the Adena American Legion Post 525 to follow. Wreath placement at Rehoboth, Holmes and Adena Presbyterian cemeteries will commence following the placement of wreaths at St. Casimir.

Among those in attendance will be Adena Mayor Brenda Roski, Smithfield Township Trustees, Edison High School FFA students, the Jefferson County Fair Queen, local veterans, active service members and families.

The free event is open to all. The organization encourages community members to participate by volunteering locally or to sponsor a wreath for an American hero.
