Science center to offer several holiday events
PITTSBURGH — This holiday season at the Kamin Science Center, festive fun meets discovery. The museum will transform into a destination of holiday favorites, including:
• Marveling at the Miniature Railroad and Village has been a holiday tradition for Pittsburghers since 1919. The exhibit showcases a detailed model of Western Pennsylvania from the first half of the 20th century, with animated winter scenes and historic landmarks.
• SkyWatch, a guided planetarium show, will be offered from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Dec. 6. The cost is $10 for members and $12 for non-members. Spot Jupiter, stand beneath meteor showers and catch a glimpse of Andromeda
• “The Polar Express” will be shown in 3-D in the Rangos Giant Cinema on select dates between Nov. 28 and Dec. 24. This classic holiday tale revels in the spirit of the season by embarking on a magical train ride to the North Pole. The cost is $10 for members and $12 for non-members.
• Make your table the talk of the town during the BNY Fab Lab Workshops. Participants will create one-of-a-kind, custom-engraved charcuterie boards in the makerspace on select days between Nov. 5-24 at the cost of $15. Customize your holiday with a laser-cut wooden ornament using CAD software. The activity will be held on select days between Nov. 28 to Dec. 30 at the cost of $15.
• Step into an active, Sports360 exhibition Dec. 13. Shoot, swing, throw, kick and cheer your way through hands-on challenges, putting your body and brain to the test. The exhibit is for visitors of all ages.
• A lineup of “feel-good” holiday films on Pittsburgh’s largest movie screen, the Rangos Giant Cinema. Features will be shown at 8 p.m. on Fridays. In November, movies will include: “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” Friday; “Die Hard,” Nov. 14; “Edward Scissorhands,” Nov. 21; and “Batman Returns,” Nov. 28. Throughout December, films include “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles,” Dec. 5; “Home Alone,” Dec. 12; and “Elf,” Dec. 19. Additional shows will include: “Krampus,” 8 p.m. Dec. 6; “Frozen Sing-along,” 10 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. Dec. 27; and “Frozen II,” in 3-D, 10 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. Dec. 28.
• Laser shows will be featured at the center, including “Laser Stranger Things,” on weekends through Dec. 14 in the Buhl Planetarium. Take a trip to the upside down and relive “Running Up that Hill” and “Master of Puppets” scenes.
The Laser Holiday Magic Show runs from Nov. 28 to Dec. 31 in the planetarium. Sing along to traditional and contemporary holiday tunes, while animations and abstracts dance along the dome. The cost will be $6 for members and $7 for non-members.
• Events for adults only include Culinary Science, set for 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Nov. 14. Explore the museum with a drink in hand and food for thought, while playing with your food in fun and informative ways. Level up your cooking game through live demonstrations and hear from chemists in the culinary world. The cost is $20 for members and $25 for non-members. Food and alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase. Stranger Science is scheduled tfrom 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Dec. 12. Enjoy a cocktail and five floors of exhibitions. Dress in “gnarly ’80s garb or “Stranger Things” cosplay, and uncover the real science behind sci-fi TV shows.
