Toronto seniors to hold Halloween meeting
TORONTO — The Toronto Sunrise Seniors met Sept. 26 with President Barbara Pritts welcoming members and special guest Michael Vok.
Mary Lou Emery offered the blessing prior to the the meal consisting of fried chicken. Following dinner, the group recognized with a round of applause, those serving on the September kitchen committee, including Karen Martin, Dale Martin, Emery and Kenny Emery.
Social Secretary Mary Ann Landerfield introduced Vok, who represented the Laurels.
He gave a presentation of the services which the Laurels provides and the various activities that are open to the public.
The Laurels provided three door prizes for the group, which were won by Martin, Landerfield and Hank Sheets.
Landerfield prepared a display board featuring activities that are available to seniors, explaining each and stating all are free to seniors wishing to participate.
Following the reciting of the pledge, Secretary Karen Martin conducted the call of officers and read the September minutes.
Treasurer Lynn Miller gave the financial report and announced she will be collecting the $5 club dues at the next meeting.
Pritts announced the kitchen committee for October will consist of members David Devore, Ethel Stevens, Dave Trudick and Bonnie Wilson. An additional three volunteers agreed to help.
The group’s next meeting, scheduled for Oct. 24, will have a Halloween theme.
Pritts challenged the group to decorate a can or box of food in Halloween attire.
“Make it funny, scary, cute, obnoxious or whatever you choose,” she said. Members will then vote for the winner, who will receive $30 in Reisbeck’s gift cards.
Pritts encouraged members to bring food donations to the meeting to assist the Helping Hands Food Pantry. The decorated items will be donated as well.
Pritts distributed fliers for the Dec. 2 trip to see the Oglebay Festival of Lights.
The bus will leave the Clarke Hinkle Stadium parking lot at noon. Participants can choose where to spend their time prior to seeing the light display. The choice is to either visit the Wheeling Island Hotel, Casino and Racetrack or shop at the Ohio Valley Mall.
The group will then travel to the Olive Garden at the Highlands for dinner, followed by a tour of the Festival of Lights at Oglebay, with a stop near the site’s lighted musical tree. The cost to attend the trip, including dinner, is $35 for members and $45 for non-members.

Marlene Garrett was recognized as the group’s member of the month. Lucy Timko and Phyllis Smith were the winners of the 50/50 drawing.
Following announcements, brag time and the joke of the evening, the meeting adjourned.
Members stayed to play bingo, with the following being named winners: Louie Nelson, Mary Jane Tottka, Donna Farmer, Smith, Stevens, Bea Lytle, Garrett, DeVore, Mary Murphy, Landerfield, Timko, Brenda Fetty, Jackie Porter and Patti Losey.
The Toronto Sunrise Seniors will meet at 5 p.m. Friday at the Karaffa Recreation Complex on Dennis Way.
