Toronto seniors discuss upcoming events

TORONTO — The Toronto Sunrise Seniors met Oct. 10, with President Barbara Pritts welcoming members and asking for a moment of silence in memory of long-time member Paul Sherwood.

Gloria Boley gave the blessing prior to the meal which consisted of meatball sandwiches and side dishes and desserts provided by members. Those in attendance thanked the kitchen committee of Dave Devore, Ethel Stevens, Brenda Fetty and Mary Ann Landerfield, as well as those who helped in any way. Hank Sheets sold 50/50 tickets and Laura Sheets called bingo numbers.

The meeting reopened following dinner. Secretary Karen Martin conducted the roll call of officers and read the minutes from the Sept. 26 meeting. Treasurer Lynn Miller gave the financial report.

The group agreed to support the Toronto Toys for Tots project with a financial donation. Members will collect toys during the next two meetings to donate to the organization. Social Secretary Mary Ann Landerfield announced those having an October birthday and updated the group on upcoming events, including a Senior Expo at St. Florian Hall from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday.

An activity which celebrates Halloween and helps with Thanksgiving is being planned for the seniors’ Friday meeting. A competition will be held in which members will decorate a can or box of food and dress it up for Halloween. The decorations will be displayed prior to the meal. Members will serve as judges, with the winner to receive $30 in gift cards. Those who do not wish to participate in the contest are asked to bring a food item. All food items will be donated to the Helping hands Food Pantry.

Pritts reminded members of the bus trip to Oglebay Dec. 2. Shopping, gambling and dinner will be part of the package. There are 36 members signed up to date, she noted. The bus can hold 10-12 more people. The cost is $35 for members and $45 for non-members. Contact Vice President Sandi Radvansky at (740) 317-9088 to attend.

Mary Murphy was recognized as member of the month. The group enjoyed playing group Jenga, with three teams competing in the event. Members of the winning team received a free bingo card. The winners of the 50/50 drawing were Devore and Mary Lou Deku.

Following announcements, brag time and the joke of the evening, the meeting was adjourned.

The next meeting is at 5 p.m. Friday at the Karaffa Recreation Center. Anyone 55 or older and who resides in Ohio is welcome to join the group. Bingo winners included: Bea Lytle, Frank Marino, Sheets, Murphy, Stevens, Fetty, Donna Farmer, Mary Lou Deku, Miller, Devore, Bob Deku, Louie Nelson and Betty Mossor.
