Volleyball event to bring awareness

WELLSBURG — The Brooke High School Lady Bruins’ volleyball team will host a Dig Pink Game Night fundraiser today to support the Wheeling Cancer Center. The team will play against Weir High School and Catholic Central High School beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Held in observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the evening will include a 50/50 drawing, Chinese auction, concession stand, free face painting and an opportunity to remember loved ones with a pink ribbon displayed in the corridor outside the gym.

Several community members who have battled the disease will be recognized. The team invites everyone to join in raising funds for the battle against cancer and to recognize the many who have fought it.

Historical museum cancels event

TORONTO — The Pleasant Hill School House Historical Museum planned a fundraising event for Oct. 4 at the Knoxville Volunteer Fire Department; however, officials announced on Wednesday that the square dance and cake walk has been canceled due to not having a caller for the activity.

A new date has not been announced. The purpose was to raise money for a new roof on the building, which was built in the 1800s. Anyone who is interested in contributing to the school house museum can do so by contacting President Ryan Finney at (740) 381-0592.

House of Prayer honors grandparents

RAYLAND — The House of Prayer Church in Rayland, located near Brilliant, held a special Grandparents Day service at the church earlier this month.

Church officials distributed gifts to a few of the grandparents in the congregation. Among those who received a gift was Sam Firm Sr., who was named oldest grandfather. Linda Burge was the title holder for being the oldest grandmother. The youngest grandfather at the church was Mike Flesher, while the youngest grandmother was Tanya Flesher. The grandfather of the year went to Roger Swigert. The grandmother of the year went to Brenda Burge.

UMWA to meet

HOPEDALE — The United Mine Workers of America Local No. 1304 will hold its regular meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Hopedale American Legion, located on Rabbit Road in Hopedale. Breakfast will be served at 9:30 a.m.

Barktoberfest returns to Wintersville

WINTERSVILLE — Lovers and owners of dogs are invited to participate in the second-annual Barktoberfest, scheduled to be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday at the Wintersville dog park, located at the Edward P. Laman Community Park behind the Village Building. The event will include a pet costume contest, food trucks and a dedication of the bite suite, which was provided for the Wintersville Police K-9 unit by the Fort Steuben Kennel Association.

The Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County has planned a dog-themed StoryWalk activity near the park during October. Those who read the book are then eligible to receive a dog treat at the Schiappa Library.

Class of ’59 to meet

STEUBENVILLE — The Steubenville High School Class of 1959 held its monthly luncheon on Sept. 10. The group had 18 people in attendance. Norina Eroshevich provided the blessing, while sympathy was extended to Rufus Simmons and his family on the loss of his son. Well wishes were extended to Glenda Barger Zombeck.

A cake was provided by Donna and Charles Snyder, which the group enjoyed to celebrate those having a birthday in September, including Dedanna Nodianos.

The class’s next luncheon is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Oct. 8 at Froehlich’s Classic Corner, located at 501 Washington St. To make a reservation, call Eroshevich at (740) 219-2234. All are welcome to attend.

Storytime at library

WELLSBURG — The Brooke County Public Library will hold an evening Storytime with Miss Kim at 5 p.m. Oct. 8. Special guest readers include A Child’s Place CASA officials.

Children will hear “The Wonderfully Wild Ones,” by West Virginia author Adeline Boggs, enjoy a craft and have snacks. The program is provided in partnership with West Virginia Public Broadcasting. Limited spaces are available. To register, call (304) 737-1551 or visit brookecountylibs.org/events.

Jefferson Democratic Women to meet

STEUBENVILLE — The next meeting of the Jefferson County Democratic Women will be held at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 9 at the Schiappa Library, located at 100 Mall Drive in Steubenville.

Soup and sweet sale

MINGO JUNCTION — Harmony Church of Mingo Junction will hold a soup and sweet sale from noon to 1 p.m. on Oct. 11 at the church, located at 2119 Commercial Ave. in Mingo Junction. Library to show film

WELLSBURG — The Brooke County Library will show the movie “F1,” rated PG-13, at noon on Oct. 10. The racing feature stars Brad Pitt as a former driver who returns to Formula 1, alongside Damson Idris as his teammate. Attendees can bring a lunch. Popcorn and water will be provided.
