‘Tearin’ Up the Turf’ returns

RICHMOND — The Edison High Band will host its 20th year of its annual extravaganza, “Tearin’ Up the Turf,” at 7 p.m. Saturday at Cartwright Memorial Stadium in Richmond. Gates open at 6 p.m.

Approximately 600 high school band musicians from across the area will converge upon Edison High School to participate in the event. The cost is $8 for adults, $5 for senior citizens and students and free for children 5 and under.

Director Marc Sansone stated, “It’s a night to showcase music with bands across the Tri-State Area. This is to celebrate the 20th year, so we will be doing a mass band performance at the end.”

Bands participating include, Edison, Oak Glen, Toronto, Harrison Central and Buckeye Trail. Thomas Jefferson High School, located near Pittsburgh, will be returning to perform, as well as Sandy Valley and Johnstown attending as newcomers.

Sansone said the premise was to have bands join together in harmony and highlight members’ talents.

“It’s a long-standing tradition from different regions and the state, but there weren’t any locally,” he said. “I went to band shows in high school and knew it was a good experience. There are no winners or losers, and it raises funds for the school program and creates camaraderie among the groups. It’s 20 years later and here we are.”

A variety of tunes will be played, with Edison’s 65-member band performing selections from popular rock groups, including Shinedown, Bon Jovi, Smashmouth and Avenged Sevenfold.

T-shirts, concessions and candygrams will be sold, while attendants can hold a meet-and-greet with band members. Band directors will gather in a special director’s lounge before the concert.

Sansone, who plans to retire in the spring following 33 years of service, said the concert will be significant to him, as it will be his last “Tearin’ Up the Turf” event.
