Swing dance returns

STEUBENVILLE — The monthly community dance night, Steubenville Swing Dance, has returned following a temporary closure, according to dance instructors Dan and Mary Selmeczy, who are the activity’s relaunched leaders. The dance offers beginner-friendly mini-lessons and live jazz music in the third-floor ballroom of Leonardo’s Coffeehouse.

The event is presented in partnership with the Harmonium Project, a local nonprofit known for supporting community arts and downtown revitalization.

“We’re excited to reopen Steubenville Swing Dance and continue the tradition of bringing people together through dance and live music,” said Dan Selmeczy, co-instructor and event organizer. “Our goal is to make it fun, welcoming and affordable. You don’t need prior experience to have a great time.”

Each event includes short five-minute lessons in swing, rumba and foxtrot, followed by an evening of social dancing to live jazz performed by Matt Hill and the Classics. The lessons are designed for beginners, but enjoyable for seasoned dancers, Selmeczy noted.

Dances are $15 per couple or $10 per person, payable at the door. No partner is required. All ages are welcome. The next dance will be announced at a later date.

Dentistry to celebrate Freedom Day

WELLSBURG — Almost Heaven Family Dentistry will hold its fourth-annual Freedom Day — an event dedicated to offering free dental care to veterans and active-duty military personnel — on Oct. 9 at its Wellsburg office, located at 1512 Commerce St. The event is a way to say thank-you for the military’s service and sacrifice to this country, according to officials.

The day is part of a national effort to give back to the heroes who have given so much, officials announced. Freedom Day is one of the team’s most cherished events of the year, and reflects the practice’s commitment to faith and community.

Officials explained the team is looking forward to the event following last year’s recognition, as it was “a tremendous success.”

“We laughed, cried, hustled, loved and gave it our all, all day,” stated Dr. Olivia Mason, noting the dentistry served 28 veterans, providing $24,370 worth of free dental care. Thanks to local businesses and their generosity, the dentistry held a drawing, awarding 27 prizes valued at $2,971.

“We believe it’s important to show our gratitude in meaningful ways,” Mason said. “Freedom Day is our opportunity to serve those who’ve served us. We look forward to this every year.”

“Every smile we restore is a small way to say thank you,” added Dr. Tess Ferrari. “Our team is honored to stand behind our veterans and military members.”

Services provided will include dental exams, cleanings, fillings and other urgent dental care — all free of charge for veterans and active-duty military in the Wellsburg, Weirton and surrounding areas. Appointments are limited and must be scheduled in advance by calling (304) 737-2533. Proof of service is required.
