Golfing for animals

The friendly game of golf known as the Annual Charity Golf Scramble, took place July 19 at Mountaineer’s Woodview Golf Course in New Cumberland. This year’s event went to help the animals residing at the Jefferson County Humane Society in Wintersville. A check for $1,000 was presented to JCHS by team members of the Steubenville bar, Enzo’s Fine Food, and team members of Steubenville’s Polish Athletic Club. The PAC has a history of past charitable donations through sports-related tournaments, including bowling. The teams involved in this year’s tournament are friends who made a last-minute decision to help the shelter, after learning about its need for assistance. The no-kill nonprofit agency receives no state funding, relying solely on public donations to operate its pound and clinic. Golf participants stated they plan to play for the humane society again, with the hope of making the event bigger and better next year. All of the players involved hustled to make the event happen for the shelter, including offering a 50/50 drawing at the tournament. Those taking part in the check presentation on Tuesday, included, from left, Anthony Simmons Sr., Enzo’s Bar; Kenny Davis, PAC president; Sally Wehr, JCHS president; Brandi DeNoon-Damewood, JCHS development manager; Frank Deleonardis, PAC trustee; and Tim Piergallini, owner of Enzo’s. “If there is something we can do to help as a club, then that’s what we’re supposed to be about,” Piergallini stated. Wehr responded that grants are hard for the humane society to come by, so “something like this means a lot.”
