Ohio Goes to the Movies

COLUMBUS — Beginning next year, Ohio Goes to the Movies will run in all 88 counties in Ohio. The America 250-Ohio signature event will screen more than 250 movies that recognize Ohioans who have worked in front of the camera and behind it, including Paul Newman, Macy Gray, Dean Martin, Woody Harrelson, Ruby Dee, Doris Day, Rachael Harris and more. Venues can be added through September.

Some of the upcoming experiences not to be missed include: McConnell Arts Center in Worthington, which will screen the 2000 film “Best in Show,” featuring Worthington resident Harris. The venue will partner with a local animal rescue. Following the screening, a discussion with Harris will be held.

The Kent State University Museum will feature one of the world’s most important collections of fashion textiles and decorative arts, including clothing and costumes from the estate of Katharine Hepburn.

The museum’s current exhibition, Hepburn Style: Katherine and Her Designers, showcases three costume designers who worked with Hepburn on stage and screen productions.

A screening of the 1940 movie “The Philadelphia Story,” starring Hepburn and written by Ohio screenwriter Donald Ogden Stewart, will be shown.

Cincianniti’s only independently-owned theater group, the Esquire Theater, will showcase actresses from Ohio who had long-standing careers.

The theater will show the 1961 film “A Raisin in the Sun,” with Cleveland’s Dee. The Mariemont Theater will screen the 1961 movie “Lover Come Back,” with Cincinnati’s Day. The Kenwood Theater will show the 1966 movie “Boy, Did I Get a Wrong Number,” with Lima’s Phyllis Diller.

The events will be hosted as premiere showings with red carpet, step and repeat photo opportunities, themed concessions, film facts, women’s early struggles in the industry and their inspiration to contemporaries in the field.

The Cedar Lee Theater in Cleveland Heights will host “Cool Hand Luke,” starring Newman, who worked at the Cedar Lee in his youth.

Newman’s daughter, Melissa, will introduce the movie and participate in a question-and-answer session. She will speak at Cuyahoga County Public Library in advance of the event and sign her book, “Head Over Heels: Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman, A Love Affair in Words and Pictures.”

The Colony Square 7 Cinemas in Loveland will screen the 2012 movie “The Hunger Games,” featuring Harrelson, who graduated from Lebanon High School.

Steubenville’s Dean Martin Festival, organized by the Dean Martin Association, will screen hometown-favorite Dean Martin’s 1959 western film “Rio Bravo.”

Sauder Village in Archbold will screen “The Sound of Music,” with Baroness Eleanor Parker, born in Cedarville.

Ohio connections behind the camera will be represented by Ohio Goes to the Movies venues, including the Robins Theater in Warren, that selected the 2001 movie “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” directed by Ohio’s Chris Columbus.

The Lions Lincoln Theater in Massilon selected “Spiderman” because the movie features a cameo and music performed by Stark County native Macy Gray. Massillon’s art museum, library and arts council will team up for the screening in their community.

This first-of-its-kind event will kick off Feb. 11 and run for 250 days, with screenings in every Ohio county.

The Ohio Movie Database was created as a website resource of Ohio-centric content to inspire involvement and awareness of this event.

OGTTM Program Director Molly Kreuzman stated, “More than 250 venues have already signed on to host movie events, including drive-ins, historic theaters, commercial cinemas, as well as community centers, museums, libraries and more.

“Ohio Goes to the Movies is growing beyond our expectations, and we are so excited because no one has ever done something of this reach and scope,” Kreuzman added.

The deadline to sign up to be an Ohio Goes to the Movies event is Sept. 30. Events that meet the criteria and are selected will be included on the calendar and promoted statewide. For information or to sign up, e-mail Kreuzman at mkreuzman@ohiohistory.org or Bethany Berry at bberry@ohiohistory.org.
